I miss my T4, looking for a new compact

Hi guys

Really a bit sad that I had to sell my Yashica T4 which was in mint condition. Trying to find another but in the meanwhile I was wondering if some of you have great experience with other compact camera's.

I prefer full automatic, with flash and comparable to the T4 in image quality.

There is thread here full of love for the Olympus Mju-II (Stylus Epic in the US). I actually sold my T4 and bought a Mju-II instead. I now have three. I find it the ultimate P&S.

You can find a Mju-II for as little as 2 Euros (I was lucky a few weeks ago).

My T4 was very poor at focusing correctly so I gave up on it. The Mju-II's lens is probably not quite as good (but still very good), but the exposure, AF and auto flash tech in it or second to none. And I mean that literally.
 
If you like the T4 so much, just get another T4. Personally, I was a little underwhelmed by mine. I would rather spend $15 on something like a Pentax PC35AF or a Ricoh FF90 or a Nikon Lite Touch AF than $300 on the Yashica. But to each his own, I suppose. The MjuII that is referred to is the fixed-length 35mm with the 2.8 aperture.

Hi,

The zooms are nice but summer time (or sunny days) only as the tele ends get down to f/8-ish wide open - depending on how far they zoom.

The one you want is the plain mju-II or mju-I which are even cheaper (say a pound or so).

There are others as nice Ricoh R1, Konica A4, Pentax ESPIO mini, all the Leica/Minolta/Panasonic minis and Olympus XA, XA2, XA3 etc.

Finding one in good condition is important. Bitter experience tells me that only the Olympus XA etc are repairable simply because cult status means specialists repairing them.

PS I miss my old Contax Tix which was an APS camera (sigh).
 
I'm not a fan of zoom in general so I'll be on the look out for those you mentioned incl the Mju II ...

any other recommendations? because I am really impressed with those examples. Although the FF90 seems a bit foggy.
 
Look at the Contax T. It's an all-metal manual focus fixed lens (38mm f2.8 zeiss) that is compact, and makes great images.
 
FF90 CAN NOT be foggy....either faulty or processing should gone bad. Zooms beating bunch of fixed focal length lenses - Fuji Zoom Data FF2.8, Fuji DL Zoom Mini, Mju V aka Stylus Select 105, Prego 90 AF - to name a few. I'd load them any time, especially going on trip.
 
I sold a number of compacts a while ago as I wasn't shooting film much. The only one I held onto was my fave Pentax Espio Mini. Only a 3.5 lens but slightly wider than most at 32mm. Very sharp and contrasty, with flash modes, a panoramic mode and even a B setting. About the size of a pack of playing cards and challenges the Mju.
Though my fave film compact I've considered selling it as I'm not putting film through any of my cams anymore including this one, my Oly Trip or Rollei 35. I'm afraid the dark digital has taken me over.

I have found the Canon Sure Shot series to be universally very good, whether fixed-length or zoom. The Canon ML and the Classic 120 are standouts. The Canon MC has a great lens, but is a noisy little bugger. Also, the Nikon L35AF and One Touch (L35AF2). Konica offered many good compacts, the Big Mini seems quite well received, and I love my Lexio 70. I have had excellent results with some of the Pentax IQZoom cameras. Samsung compacts are the best bargains, if buying on-line.

My feeling on the 35mm compacts is buy locally, and buy cheap, and don't worry too much about brand, or cult status. I can't really think of many that I have disliked.
