I need a advanced P&S with ISO setting of upto 1600, exposure compensation, manual focus or snap mode, wide and fast lens 28 or 35... for low light photography - mostly streets at night.

Ricoh GR1 is too rare and expensive and most of those sellers on auction site won't ship to Canada.

How's the Nikon L35 AF?
 
Ricoh FF-70 or FF-700 (newer model w/ lithium battery, same 35mm lens) - anything except MF or SnapMode. For their price they are million.

I were so excited that wrote here mini-review.
 
Definately a Minolta TC-1. Manual ISO setting, Manual/Auto Focus, Spot Meter, Manual Aperture, and 28/f3.5 Rokkor lense.

You really can't get any better in any situation: load it up with Neopan 1600 and you really can't find a better low-light shooter (bar a Fuji Natura S, but good luck getting one of those)!

I wanted something similar and posted a similar thread recently. And I ended up getting a Contax G1 from KEH, with 45mm Planar. You could get the 28mm Biogon instead--one of my favorite lenses ever--and have yourself a pretty compact high performance shooter with 1/2000, AE, autofocus, manual focus (it's really assisted scale focus), and exposure compensation, for around $350.

I've made some nice night shots with this combination, and Neopan 1600.
 
BillBingham2, thanks, but i need something a little more reliable and also the shipping to canada would kill it for me.



i was stalked the other night by two guys because i had my f100 in my hand. at day time i have no problem but when it gets dark i need something that i can pocket or does not look like expensive gear. my m4p is not an option - too much money involved. i need to be relaxed when i'm shooting at night.
 
Olympus XA?

35mm 2.8 on the XA or 35/3.5 on the XA 2 or the XA 4 with a 28mm (less cheap). I think the regular XA has manual ISO that goest to 1600 and the XA 4 is DX coded.

I shot a bunch at night with these. I'm not a huge fan of the lens but it works.

Is there a place in Canada that would repair them? How about if it does not go on EvilBay, I send it up to where ever in Canada would repair it (avoiding the import duties as it will be sent back :cool:). Then have it shipped to you for testing:cool:. Then you keep it.:eek:

You pay for the fixing, the shipping to the repair shop and say $10 for the camera:angel:

Another option is that you pick up a black Bessa L, an old CV 28/1.9 and a black metal 28mm CV finder. While it's not automatic it works great for existing darkness.

While you say you do not want a slow lens, I think a 25/4 would be fine. You can get one used with finder at www.cameraquest.com right now. Pick up the black Bessa L should set you back between $75 and $125 these days.

How about an olympus stylus epic MJU? 35mm? f2.8 zuiko lens and weatherproof. Meant to be pretty good - never had one myself though.
 
Thanks BillBingham2, I don't know of any place in Canada that repairs Ricoh cameras. But I'm sure someone will snag your camera.


Perhaps I should look at other options, maybe a compact SLR with a wide angle lens. I think that's the cheapest option.
 
The Konica Hexar AF! It has a truly amazing lens and it has all the features you're looking for except manual focus. It was my favorite street photography camera... DEFINITELY wish I hadn't sold it!
 
You might want to look for a GR-D I, I know it's digital but it is a great camera.

If you want to go down the SLR path, don't go too far. Look for a black OM-1 and a 28/2.8 Zuiko lens. Together I doubt it's heavier than an M with just about anything you put on her. Take a look here for sizes of Zuiko:

You will find the OM-1 feels very much like an RF.

have you looked into the Rollei AFM 35? More affordable than the rest, great lens and good feature set. What I like best is that the manual focus is a first dial adjustment (unlike the Contax and Leica cameras in this class).

(I have two and will be selling the mint in box copy soon probably to help fund Christmas... let me know if you are interested... they are really great cameras)
 
The L35 AF doesn't have your requirements for manual focus/snap mode, 1600 ASA (800 max) or exposure compensation. That being said it's a very capable camera for night streets and certainly inexpensive/
