I'm almost sure Joe's old computer has a HDD instead of SSD - this is what makes big difference. It's like viagra, as they say. Though if cureent PC is decade old I agree replacing whole thing is way better.

Recently we got price hike on electricity, I replaced my decade old tower which actually worked fine with low power PC and my expenses will pay back in a year or so, yet I will enjoy current silent hardware.

So, how free space is left on your HD? What is the HD's maximum capacity?

I would take a peek at Amazon's used market. I understand they are more reliable than E-Bay. Of course buying used increases risk.

Back in '92 when I got laid off I didn't know a thing about computers. Got a broken down 286 from an in-law and went to town learning about them. I figured out how to run AutoCad on a 386DX40 with only 2 mb's of RAM and 9" monochrome monitor.
You can do it. Just use common sense when handling the electronics. It's kind of fun when you turn it on and it works, knowing you built it or put it together.

A little OT....But, this DIY idea sparked in me.

I too am going to replace my 5 year old laptop in mid Feb 2015
And I have a friend who is an IT guy for Indianapolis City Gov., that fixes and updates all the cities computers...

I asked him if he could built me one to my specks, and he will....
That will save me close to $400 buying a store bought one with similar specks....🙂🙂 Thanks AlwaysOnAuto 🙂🙂

Gee, if you've gone as far as to spec it out, you may as well assemble it yourself. Determining the parts is the real work. If you can assemble an IKEA bookshelf you can build a computer. It's fun, too.

Another vote for the Mac mini, I recently took a Photoshop Course and our instructor (of course much more expert than myself) is using a mini for all of his work.

Gaming like....500gb SSD HD, (just for OS and software, photos etc are all on my 2tx2t RAID external HD), i7 3.0+Ghz CPU, min 16gb fast ram,
MB that take up 64gb of ram, USB 3 ports, fast card reader, OVERKILL, why not 😀

I actually used to have a TI994a (my first) and a TS 1000 (with small printer and 16 mg expansion - my second). Then moved to the Comodore 64 before realizing PC's were beginning to rule the world.

Going for the maxed out older Mini is IMO better than the flagship new mini. The old model is quad core so itll perform better, and the ram and hard drives are easier to replace down the road.
