I witnessed a horrible thing today. :(

I was driving on the interstate today to the capitol of Arkansas in order to send off some film (it's about a 45 minute drive or so). Anyway on my way there I noticed something on the grass divider between the opposite lanes of traffic.

I didnt think much of it as there's usually trash or blown out tires waiting for a cleaning truck to come by and pick them up today.

Anyway, i finish up and send my film off and start driving back.

As I get back to the same area I spotted the questionable item in the median (divider)... I notice that the object gets up. It's a puppy. It's extremely startled and confused. I assume someone had thrown it out on the grass because they didnt want it.

I see the dogs ears flapping around as it walks a few feet on the grassy area.

I imediately knows what is going to happen. Before my very eyes the dog takes off running across the lane of traffic and gets hit head on by a four door sedan.

Without going into too much description and graphic detail, I know immediately that the dog is already dead.


It was so horrifying. You can imagine what happens when a small dog is hit by a car driving at least 70-80 mph.

I cant help but keep seeing that poor dog being hit replayed over and over in my head. 🙁

Don't they have a shelter which allows no-question or anonymous surrender around there?

I'm outspokenly opposed to capital punishment, but it's jerks like this that make me reconsider! 🙁

Hard to say if the pup was dumped by someone or was the offspring of abandoned dogs. Either way, the animal was a victim of human callousness.

I had to come to a complete stop the other day to avoid an obvioulsy very confused and frightened adult dog who was walking on the road, and then just stared at me. It's funny how some dogs seem to have an awareness of traffic and will wait for a clear spot, while others are clueless.

Deer around here are ranging far afield because of the drought, plus it's mating season, so the they are blundering around blinded by hormones. Not unusual to see caracasses along the roads, even in suburban areas.

Lots of squirrels commiting highway suicide, too: Bumper crop of acorns.

Tough luck!
I have had a not too dissimilar experience.
A few years back was on a dual carriageway with an an overbridge coming up.
A dog walker with a 'pack' of dogs was obviously 'not in charge'.
All the dogs were off their leads, and all the dogs came down the embankment onto the carriageway in front of me.
Instead of keeping together they fanned out across the road.
At the speed I was going - well within the limit - it was not a question of whether I would hit a dog but how many.
No point in swerving.
Not a great point in doing an emergency stop.
I knew I was going to hit one or more.
Was I lucky?
I only collided with one dog.
I hoped I would straddle it and not hit it with a wheel.
The dog went underneath the car and I managed to stop.
The dog got to its feet and walked away to the dog walker who now appeared.
It's in moments like this that you have to keep your mouth shut.
The enormity of what had happened, what could have happened, is enough.
What can one adequately say anyway?
So after exchanging details etc, I went my way.
But it wasn't a happy ending.
I had a dent in the underneath of the car.
The dog whilst in the shock of the accident was able to walk, was found to have had a bad back injury and subsequently had to be 'put down'.
But like you, I can replay the incident in my mind.
Life can be very cruel at times.
