ICCD May 1st to 7th 2014

What better way to photograph the May Day / International Workers Day / Seattle Anti-Capitalist March (and rioting)?

Alas, I'll be at work. I'll try to shoot something over the weekend.

Load that "Commie camera" up. We can even share our photo's here on RFF. We have too many post about broken FSU camera's. Time to show what a good working FSU camera is capable of.:D

When I've managed to participate in ICCD I've always used my FED-2, but this year I might just put a roll through my Smena-6. It will be a game-time decision, I think.

Going to be the Zarya again for me, after one more tweak of the shutter. Lets see: no meter, no rangefinder, and using metric distance scale. Ought to be fun.

The fed won't be here soon enough, so an Exakta is going to have to do.

The flickr group is for 7 days. Heck we can just make the month of May Commie camera month. Post when you get the Fed. When I finish this roll in the Fed 5 I'll load the Zorki with the J-12.

Maybe Phil can get his Fed 2 in operation before the month is over. Anyone else with an FSU camera come join us.

Got twenty-one shots into the roll before I remembered I was going to cover that light leak. Well, maybe the last 14 shots will be okay. Gotta finish the roll tomorrow. At least I did tighten up that second curtain.

Dropped off my roll of Ilford FP4 late this afternoon, so should have them back Monday evening. Good thing I wasn't shooting color, because their C41 machine burned up last week, and they just got the replacement in today. I've already got one roll waiting in line, and started rolls in two different cams.

Hmmm, nothing personal but if we are going to call them "Commie" cameras, then what should we call the pre-war German ones.... ?

Don't know David. I'm no historian & surely didn't come up with the name commie camera. I just play along.:D BTW I didn't even know there was any "Pre War" Soviet camera's. Do you have one? I'd like to see it.

I need to upload some more shots, but my output for ICCD2014 is over here. The Kiev-4a for once didn't give problems with frame spacing. I guess using a take-up canister helps. As for Rollei Retro 400S: There's magic in there somewhere, but I'll need to shoot some more of it to make it shine. Another stop at the exposure end would've probably helped a lot though :D

Hi,

Sorry I couldn't reply sooner, I was looking for a link to something of interest to show the early story of the FED and Zorki cameras. Here it is:-

http://www.fedka.com/Useful_info/Commune_by_Fricke/commune_A.htm

But I've nothing earlier than a FED 1 from the late 40's and a Summar clone which is a lot earlier. They look like this.

My other comment was aimed at those people who use the word "Commie" as though the cold war was still being stirred up. The 2nd WW generated a few nasty names for the Germans and I don't see them used about early German cameras, which is inconsistent. Obviously, we are more open to reason on this forum.

Interesting read David. I like the design of the early Fed 1. Looks more like a true Barnack Leica than the later clones. I can't fathom what went through their minds to even clone the same Leica inscription on the camera's. Seems to me it would have been much better to show off Russian pride in mfg. instead of copying the Germans even down to the inscription, especially sinse Stallin wanted to further the Russian industrial revolution. Thanks for the bit of history. I knew some of it but was unaware it went back to so early of a time.
