The masters always shot the best they could afford. It would depend on his wallet, just like us.

Perhaps not "best" only in terms of financially most expensive, though. It probably was the best equipment to express their vision and achieve their need. Often that is expensive gear or cutting edge (for their time) but not always.
 
The Leica back in his day was the latest and greatest technology for portability and surreptitious street shooting. He wasn't into ultimate image quality a la Ansel Adams. So what would be the equivalent today? Apple iPhone 4S, perhaps?
 
Why is it inconceivable that he would choose a M rangefinder? There are lots of street photographers at the top of the field shooting film RFs and quite a few are under 50 years old... There are plenty of the same shooting the M9. There is a reason for this and it has nothing to do with brand snobbery. I suspect it is the same reason I shoot Ms. I find nothing works quite so well, but am experimenting with the X100.
