I don't see the problem except for the douchebag with the teeth? Mario Testino is an excellent photographer in general..

My god, what are you saying? Those were taken by Mario Testino! How dare you criticise the work of a man who has photographed generations of British royalty?!?
</sarcasm>
I dunno about money back, but I can name thousands of photographers who could have done as well...or better.

Perhaps he fogot to bring his camera and had to shoot it all on a cheap mobile phone?

Perhaps, what exactly were you hoping for?

I suspect that the newspaper wasn't as concerned with the image quality as the Queen may be with the actual prints. Additionally they may not have received the primo shots to post.
I'm pretty sure that Mario Testino knows how to take a photograph and besides, the Royal Family trusts him. That may end up being just as important.

About my thought when it comes to most British royalty, too. Seems like they found the right photographer.

They're good shots.
So the blown highlights, ugly flash and out of focus doesn't bother you?
I get the shoddily-shot-mobile-phone-pics aesthetic, I just didn't it would be that appropriate given the 'customer'.

Uh, have zombies captured the throne of Britain? It is hard to imagine how they must look in the flesh, when all the postprocessing habitual from these glamour publications can't do better than that...

I saw some of the pics on TV news this evening. I was not impressed.
1st photo, 2 straight lines of people, those on bench were seated, pictured straight on, no creativity
2nd photo, someone holding a young boy, there's a tree (from the background) growing out of the boy's head
3rd photo, mom, dad, kids, but the horizon line lines up with mom's eye which bothered me.

1 hour after having looked at the images, what's left are the genuine smiles, the proximity. That's what I call a success.
So just imagine if those genuine smiles were matched with in focus, properly exposed, colour balanced images.

It would be nice if they could just have a day to celebrate with family and friends the christening of their daughter.
I don't think they gave much thought to how the photographs will be received by the public, beyond their responsibility to do so.

Really ugly photos, I agree with the OP.
Embarrassing even.

You miss my point - the guy is a well-reknown photographer, so the photographs are shot deliberately like this.
But why?
Is it to make the royals appear as 'one of us'?

We're not criticizing the royals.
This is all about sour grapes that their photographer is rich and famous and we are not even though our photos are better than these.

Oh, please.

Let's have some examples. Things you shot three scenes with a total of 15 people, a little boy, a baby, and a guy who can't wait to get to his midafternoon spanking, in a half an hour?

These remind me of my parents' wedding photos from 1968...harsh flash, washed-out color. I think they're kind of interesting looking? Like, maybe deliberately retro?
