I've been shooting with film SLRs since 1977, and film rangefinders as well, for about the last 10 years. If for some reason I couldn't use rangefinders any longer, I'd just continue to shoot with my film SLRs.

It would just be that I couldn't use that tools. I would continue to use my SLRs, TLR, folders (scale focus), and digital P&S cameras (when I was lucky enough to have time to take photos).

If you were unable to shoot with a RF camera, or even a digital camera with RF like OVF, what would you do? Move to SLRs or other type of cameras or give up on photography?


This is a hypothetical question to see how important the RF camera and its OVF is to your photography. Think about it and really imagine what would you do with no RF cameras.

Mostly what I would do now. Shoot DSLR, SLR, Konica Hexar AF, Horseman 980 off the ground glass and shoot a TLR.

My only RF-dependant camera is a Zeiss Ikon Super-Ikonta B. I'd be sad not to be able to shoot it anymore but there'd be plenty camera's left.

Giving up on photography due to no RF? Tssss..... 😉

See my avatar. It is called the "Plaubel Makiflex" Made from 1962 until 1965-ish, the final Swan Song of the German Plaubel company.
I own three of them, and practically the entire Makiflex system. Loads and Loads of FUN. 😛 And surprisingly portable, although a bit bulky.

I would continue to shoot my Leica 0 or Leica Standard. Neither are rangefinders.

I would also just keep on shooting my K1000 which has been a steady staple of mine for a very long time.

In other words, I will survive!

My second choice is always a point and shoot with a nice fixed lens and a viewfinder, so I'd probably go for that!

I'm just having too much fun with my iPhone 5, though it would be a sad day.

I lived quite nicely with a Bessa L and a 25/4 Snap Shot as a main carry everywhere camera for a number of years. If I needed to go back to film and RFs were outlawed an OM-1 and three lenses would round out the set. Perhaps the F2 plain prism rather than the OM, not sure.

I would miss the ability to focus well in existing darkness, but I have been able to get along without for a bit so I'm not sure.

What I would love is an iPhone 4 sized body, 16MP camera, good controlling software (camera app), the ability to keep RAW format, a faster processor, strong battery and the ability to be a hot spot.

But getting back on topic, I'd be OK.

As much as I love rangefinder cameras, I love photography more. I cannot imagine life without photography.

I've already, reluctantly, moved on from RFs. I've gotten used to the fact that my digital cameras aren't going to be as elegant and fondlicious as my film cameras were. At this point, I'm open to all types of cameras and can see the clear advantages of all of them based on the situation. Currently I use a Sony A7r, an Olympus E-M1, a Fuji X-Pro1, and a Ricoh GR.
