Quick question. I've had a iiif RD for about a year now. It worked pretty well, but since I don't know the history of this almost 60 year old camera, I sent it for a thorough CLA. When it came back, I noticed that when I set the shutter speed dial to 1/1000 of a second, the dial stays raised slightly. When I set the shutter speed to any of the other speeds, the dial re-seats itself against the camera body, just when on 1/1000 does it stay slightly raised. Never noticed this before I sent it for a CLA, but I rarely shoot at 1/1000 so maybe I just didn't notice.

Is this the way the camera is supposed to work? When you set the shutter speed dial to 1/1000th of a second, does the dial stay slightly raised?

Thanks for any and all info.

Best,
-Tim

Tim, that is the way it was designed. On the shutter speed dial disc, the setting holes for the 1/500 and 1/1000 speeds are quite close together. If those holes were cut in the same way, they would merge. So the 1000 hole is slightly smaller and therefore would not allow the setting pin (the part which lifts when you do the lift-and-set bit) to fully sink in as it does in the other speeds.

Plus, in the IIIf and IIIc (as well as IIIg), the raised position is part of the function. The release lever (which times when the second curtain will be released) could be designed with a second adjustable cam to allow finer timing adjustments for the 1000 setting.
