IIIf + Summitar + Leicavit = Near Perfection

A few years ago a guy on the LUG list offered to send around his TT Rapidwinder to anyone who wanted to try it out. So, I took him up on it. I had never used one before, and I thought, "what the heck, I'll give it a try." It was good, but it didn't blow me away. So, I sent it on to the next person on the list and pretty much forgot about it.

For the last couple of years, I've been playing around with screw mounts. I have a few of them. I recently had a chance to buy a Leicavit at a reasonable price, and I did. For those of you who have never tried one, I encourage you to slip one on the bottom of your camera and give it a go. It is VERY cool. Smooth and quiet. Much smoother than I remember the Rapidwinder to be. And it's the perfect size and weight for my IIIf. I'm not left-eyed. I didn't really need it, but it is a great toy.

I just got a new rapidwinder from Tom and it fits my M4-P like a glove. It is soooo smooth be it winding or sittin there when I wind the regular way. They are a perfect match. I noticed that in his documentation you need to have a break in period for them with any camera, so your might not have been mated to your camera.

I have a Mooly for my fathers old IIIa, way bigger but just as smooth. The Leicavit looks like a great fit/find. FWIW, Tom makes one for the IIIc/f/g series now too for those who can not find a Leicavit.

It does look like a perfect match for your camera, great find.

Hello B2,

I talked with Tom (via email) about his Barnack Winder, but in the end the size of the Leicavit was more to my liking and the price was much better. Tom's winders are really nice, though.
