I adore DD-X from Ilford, but awhile back I bought a bottle with a child proof safety cap, like the ones found on medicine bottles.

It was a battle the first time trying to open it, more of a battle the second. The third time, my girlfriend managed to crack it open after 30 mins on the floor, (with the bottle not me 🙁 ). This time round, we both fought it & lost... now, I can't get the darn thing off/open. I called Ilford in DE, USA & spoke to a nice gentlman who told me that this was the first he has ever heard of such an issue.

Am I the only one who has had this problem with Ilford DD-X 1 Liter bottles?

Clean male and female threads before replacing cap every time.

Find a cap from an old bottle or cut the safety ears off this one. Use the modified cap in the future.

In the mean time, soak the cap in hot water until it loosens. Or drill two small holes, one on each side, and decant the remaing developer to proper smaller glass bottles which is what you should have done the first time you opened it. The second hole is an air vent.

Ronald,

Should all chemicals be kept in small glass bottles? I am using HC110, Ilford Rapid Fix and Ilfo Stop and storing all of them as concentrate or working solutions in either their original or later bought plastic bottles. Thanks in advance!

Yes, I have the same problem and I almost broke the bottle while trying to wrestle the cap open. Not only one bottle I must add. It was 2 out of 3 bottles.

And thus, it wasn't about the cleanliness of the male or female parts before capping 😀.

Now I just transfer the DDX into those accordion bottles after I got it open.

I think the stock DDX is quite alkaline and it'll eat into glass if I'm not wrong. So I don't think it is a good idea to store it in a glass bottle. Certain plastics are very resistant to strong bases or acids.
