I find that it's best to do some of the correction during the scan and some later in photoshop. I usually find that a compressed tonal range is the result of over/underexposure. I usually do about a half correction in levels on the scanner and that expands the range in the scan so you have more to work with in PS but haven't lost a lot of detail.
