well if you want a tighter frame than the 50 but not quite a portrait lens, I think the 75 works. but i think you'd miss the 50....no?

so go with:> ZM 35/2 on MP .58 and L 75/2 on MP .85
 
Forget 75mm, over 50mm on rangefinder system is extra, which destroys the concept of minimalizmo or dualizmos 🙂 indeed 21mm is too much, I would say 1 - MP + 24/25, 2 - MP + 50 lux (hate tab focusing, still hate it) 🙂

Yep, Vlad knows. the zm 25 is such a tonally rich lens, too. Too wide for me, but if you are daring Magus you could go for it over the 35 cron!? Vlad's suggestion could save you a lot on lenses, too....especially if you substitute the zm 50 planar for the 50 lux. i have both of those, and they are both lovely....but the versatility of the lux --- especially if you are insisting on only one 50 FL lens --- makes it preferable.

Let me add one more nasty vote. 28 on the .58 and 70 in the .85 MPs.

That said, I would want to do a shoot out between the 28 and the 24 Leica and the 25 ZI. Each lens has it's own distortion look to it and I love the 25 CV so much I would want to see which of the more expensive lenses I like better. Your 75/2 is a keeper though.

If you are looking for minimalist go for distance between the lenses.

i like the 25/50 combo for a 2 lens kit.
it seems blanced to me.
the 25 is not that much wider than the 28, just a step closer.

35/75 is also nice but i don't do many portraits so it is less appealing to me these days. but the 75 is easier to use on the street than the 90, i find.

i say don't think about it too much, go with your gut and if after you decide and buy, if you think you made a mistake, make another decision.

I use ZI most of the time, for alot of reasons, it is much lighter than M7, it has bigger viewfinder, it has brighter viewfinder, it is smaller, it has 1/2000, only if it looked like M7 🙂

It doesn't in my view, as long as you stick to 90mm maximum. And I'm not ever going back to the suffocation of SLRs.

I have yet to see any photographer or photo made on rangefinder with longer lens than 50mm (not to mention amazing photos of bud-green) maybe you will find some taken with M8 in the park, shooting birds and stuff, if it had close focusing I might have used it as a close up lens, but even for that it is useless (my opinion, truly subjective and fully biased) 🙂

My preference would be for the Summilux in a 75. Maybe I'm weird but that lens has something special - and to hell with any ergonomic quibbles.

I've been following this post and reflecting on it; wondering what choices I would make were I in your position.

I think the 35 is a sublime focal length lens and I simply couldn't be without it. It strikes me as the most 'right' lens for a 35mm rangefinder (The only reason I could never live with an M3, at the risk of infuriating some of you).

I could live without a 50. I have a 1968 chrome Summicron and I don't use it that much, despite it being a superb lens.

75 would work for me, giving a manageable perspective for portrait work and being usefully longer than the 35, with the right accommodation of viewfinder framelines too.

So, on reflection, my lens choices would be 35 and 70.

When it comes to bodies, it would be an M2 and an MP (BP).

I have to say I'm lost:

- first of all you are asking on input to the solution of a problem which is highly unspecified - I have only seen one photo shot by you in the past on RFF and am otherwise unclear what you have shot or will photograph.

- over and over again in the past, you have emphasized how the 35 ASPH cron, and the 50 Summilux are the pinnacles of Leitz lens design and implementation, and how much you shoot and live with the 35mm framelength. I also remember very harsh criticism on the 28/2 Summicron, did your opinion on this lens change ?

- Also, you have made similar statements, more than once, about your favorable sentiments on the MP.

- How the hell would anybody else know what lens/body color and viewfinder magnification is good for you ? I don't think we even know if you wear glasses, for instance.

What are you trying to achieve ? We have many, many members, including some outstanding photographers, who
can financlially only dream of buying only one of the 4 items you describe. How do you think they look at a thread like
this ?

Not exactly minimalist. Normalize Leica, in Leitz' own interest.

Magus, I only mentioned that because at the moment I have that setup myself. 2 Bessa R bodies and 2 35mm Skopar lenses. It is for redundancy, and I only bring both cameras with me if I travel. It also lets me use 2 different films, though that's less about different films as it is about different film speeds. I personally tend to focus on one film and stick with it for a while.

At first I had just one Bessa R and the 35mm lens and I really got used to it. I found out that most of the photos I take work well in 35mm (you can see my website and flickr for some examples, though a few on the website were taken with a Jupiter 3 that has sinec broken) and that I like how the Bessa feels (it is very light). Eventually I wanted to try some different 35mm rangefinders. I tried a Canon 7 and a Leica M4-2 and realized that I liked the Bessa more so I ended up getting another one.

If I could afford it I would probably enjoy a BP MP .72 and a 35mm Summicron... Also, this isn't my "never going to buy more cameras" set up, just the one I have been happy with for a while. I have been meaning to try medium format but am unsure if it is necessary for my style of pictures.

Magus, will you be carrying both cameras over the shoulders at the same time or will one be in a bag?


M-Leicas look really good in SC. And BA lenses to that. That's my taste 🙂
However, if you are going to switch between two MP's it could be a good thing to separate them by color. 🙄

My first choice woun't please you as you want the 35:
MP 0.72 + 50mm
MP 0.72 + 28mm and 90mm
And since you wear glasses the 28 is a tight pick on 0.72, perhaps with an external viewfinder.

MP 0.72 + 75mm
