i posted in the contax forum about 2 wks ago. yes, i did take 4 cameras. i was sort of laughed at for taking too much gear. anyway, i have my photos scanned from puerto rico. i did take 2 rangefinders. contax g1 and a zeiss super ikonta IV. here are some photos if you want to see.

lZr thanks as well. yeah, i loved shooting the old spanish colonial architecture. lot of history there. puerto rico is beautiful. ive been twice in the past few years.

I take it, that should read f2.8. What went wrong 😕 Rangefinder lenses suffer more vignetting than SLR lenses, but this seems excessive to me 😱

when i have time i may scan it myself to see if it looks any different. 😕 i wonder if because i metered the buiding if that is giving the light fall off.😕

i dont think their that different. i think it could be metering for building. i could be wrong though. i have the contax filter on the lens.

Hi Scorpius,
There may be another explanation for the vignetting on the 28mm lens images...
If you are using a Contax lenshood on that lens, make sure it's the GG-1. If it's the GG-2, then you'll get vignetting because it's for the 45mm Planar.

misterb, i dont have a lens hood for this lens. i just the contax filter on it. im not concerned about light fall off on the images. the 28mm f2.8 rocks, in my opinion. the only contax g lens i have the hood for is the 90mm. i havent used it very much yet. i only shot 2 images with it on vacation. the 28mm stayed on my camera 90% of the time.
the images are just for my personal memories of a trip. i got engaged down there in puerto rico.

Scorpius, the image with the 2.8/28mm has a light falloff because you have used it with a wide open aperture. It's an effect I experienced very often when using my wide angle lenses on the Contax and Fujis in southern hemispheres. Stopping down helps to reduce the effect, but not totally. BTW, you'll get the same effect with a DSLR and a wide angle lens and a wide open aperture.

3 weeks ago I toured Andalucía in south Spain with my Contax and a set of lenses. Shot some very nice images. The I took my Nikon system and made another series at home (center of Spain). The images are not as sharp and clear as those I've shot with the Contax. The Zeiss lenses really do have something special.

i hear you about the wide angles on a slr. i took my 24mm f2 ais nikkor to a car show. i got the shots, but the corners are so soft its crazy. it doesnt match up to the contax 28mm. but those are apples and oranges. i love my contax g system.

I am still interested to understand the reasons for the vignetting. I am considering getting either of the Biogon's myself. With present used prices they are so attractive. At present I have both Planars and the Sonnar.

I notice, it is only this one picture which suffers badly. The other pictures are a lot better when it comes to the corner brightness. As suggested before, could it be, that this one was wide open and the others stoped down? If you look at the Zeiss data sheets (still available) http://www.zeiss.com/C12567A8003B8B6F/EmbedTitelIntern/Biogon2.8_28mm_e/$File/Biogon2.8_28mm_e.pdf
you see that vignetting on this lens improves dramatically when stoping down from f/2.8 to f/5.6.

The sheet also shows how even the performance of the Biogon is right into the corners of the frame. This is the advantage of the lens being build right into the body. You just can't have that on a SLR as you noticed.

Hi,

thanks for confirming it was wide open. It makes sense now. I think the second sample also has substantial vignetting, It is just that the subject is much better at hiding the problem.

thanks shadowfox, it wasnt worth my time or effort to say something smart. i wish i had the courage to take photos of people in their everyday life. i love looking at others work. i just dont have the courage to do it. i commend others for having the courage.
so, as you can see if take pictures of architecture. buidings cant chase me down the street.😀
