After all these years....I love street photography but never could get the in your face, up front and personal thing down. Last week I started out by saying, " Hi I'm a tourist, may I take your picture?". Every stranger I asked this said yes w/o pause. I'm in!! I'm a real street guy now.:p
Oh BTW it only works with an M3 (or any RF) and a NEX with a small lens. No DSLR's. They look too "professional".

yep, soft southerners

Only the hittees...the hitters are usually rednecks, paranoid wife cheaters or road-rage prone pedestrians.:p The "soft" southern paps are definitely aware of the risk of running afoul of said hitters and the pain associated with such.:D

From the title of the thread I thought you were going to tell us went out onto the street with a guitar, harmonica and tip jar.

Totally agree. RF or any "strange" film camera is a great ice-breaker. People often comment on my cameras and the conversation always leads to me taking their photos.
On the flipside, I was in Beirut last year visiting some Palestinian refugee camps and my D700 was the best camera I could have had. Upon seeing big professional camera everyone wanted to invite me in, take their photo and tell their story to the world. I have an open invitation to be guided through some more off-the-map refugee camps as long as I appear like a journo.

I seldom ask, I get caught sometimes, so I smile nod and move on.

Hey Sparrow!
What's wrong with those outfits? :)
Walmart has fine clothes...
See 'em everyday down here..

Funny stuff. You might want to try the automatic approach. Instead of explaining it to people just wear a ball cap and a t-shirt that says it. "Tourist with a cheap old film camera"

Yeah, these guys busted you big time. If you hadn't moved on I think they would have been happy to show you precisely what to do with your camera. Perhaps rangefinders are smaller for a reason...
