So I finally took the plunge and picked up an M8, it took a long time to realize that an M9 was going to remain forever out of reach financially (I just can't make that mental leap to buy such an expensive camera when I'm not using it to make money).

It's an M8(u), in pretty good cosmetic condition and I received it on Monday. Gosh, it was just completely familiar to me when I unboxed it and loaded it up with film-I mean a fresh SD card. Using an M8 alongside an M3 or M4p is just seamless to a remarkable degree. I'm not really sure I've ever experienced so a feeling of familiarity jumping between film and digital bodies - handling an F6 and a D700 is close but still not quite the same comparison since they were made within 5-6 years of each other. My M3 is 50 years old!

I'm loving it - noise goes to sh*t really quickly after 640 but it still retains a lot of detail and it cleans up well in photoshop. And base ISO files are just jaw dropping. I've been using the shutter in discreet mode and it's not terribly louder than my M4p but it doesn't hold a candle to my M3 (which is just barely a whisper of a snicker). All in all, I'm really glad I decided to get this camera.

Love the shot... very cute!
I have an original M8 and my biggest complaint would be the sound. Like you, the M9 is just out of reach for me... but maybe in 5 years we can both "upgrade" - LOL!

Enjoy your new camera! (I love my M8)

Congratulations. It's still a wonderful camera, and 5 to 6 years after release is the perfect buying moment for digital M's... hope to get my M9 in 2015 then :)

its great camera, have fun! I was 4 years late in party, but biggest mistake was leaving it. M9 hasnt become reality for same reasons than OP.

cute dog btw :)

Congrats on your M8! Better late than never, right? I have had an M8 for almost five years (I guess) and love it. I may be tempted by the M10, but the M8 is a fine, fine tool. Over this time, I have finally honed my lens line-up, after much trial and error. Good luck with that ...

Congrats, to the new and old M8 users. I’ve had mine for almost a year and I think it’s great. I sold mine and bought it back a few months ago and I’m very pleased.

Just out of curiosity, has anybody here been tempted by the Fuji XP1 ?

Yup. After using a pair of M8s and M8.2, I decided to move away from the system. Using an Xpro1 now.
There are things I miss about it. But I just never found the system to be all that reliable. (just my own experiences.) And I do love the higher ISO capabilities of the Fuji.
