Imacon Progression any opinion?

Hi, I may have the possibility to get a used Imacon Progression.

I already have a Nikon 5000 and my goal is to get better scans from 35mm negatives. I already used Imacon X1 or x5 and saw a clear difference from the Nikon.

Has anyone used the Progression for scanning film?
Is it different from the precision II which was made around the same time?

I have an Imacon 848 and a while back when talking to Hasselblad about it the topic of the Progression came up. I was told there is no longer support for these. If it's very cheap and working perfectly it might be ok but otherwise I wouldn't touch it. I don't know if I'd pay more than $100 for one. I'm not even sure current software supports it. You'd need to check.

Hi x-ray, thanks for your answer, I also got the info that there is no more support if anything gets broken.
I will try it and see the quality of the scans that I can get from it. If it's really cheap I might still give it a chance... Comes with an old mac that has the software.

My question was more: is it the same quality of scans than the Precision II which I heard is not so different from 848 or even x1?

Just on this, you're comparing, well not even apples and oranges but, like, apples and space oranges.

I would find it interesting, if you do get the Progression, to see a comparison between it and your 5000.

I agree, I think the Nikon is actually overrated by many people. But it's very convenient to make fast scans that are still quite good.

If the X1 and x5 may be space oranges, I would be fine if the Progression gets close to a normal orange. I will try it and let you know.

I have no idea how good the scans are. These are ancient machines. I think the III came out around 2001 but could be wrong. In any case they're pretty old.

In my conversation with Hasselblad they said that the non FireWire machines are no longer serviced by Hasselblad. That would be the Scsi Precision scanners.

The Imacon Precision II/III scanner is a fine scanner regards of the SCSI interface. If you have a Ratoc FRS1X Firewire adapter, the scanner will continue to work, provided it s has been serviced.

I spoke with Hasselblad USA last month, and thy told me that they still service the Precision. I had Hasselblad overhauled my Precision II/III when I bought it. Never an issue ever since.

I also use a Scitex Eversmart Pro II running in Leopard on my Intel Based Mac using the same Ratoc FRS1X Firewire adapter. Again was serviced by Genesis Equipment System.

For both scanners, i have spare bulbs that would allow me to scan when the need arises.
