...from my only free day to see the city.

Fangdian Road in Pudong where my hotel was located, about 8 kms. from the city center.

It was early morning and I crossed the pedestrian bridge to look for coffee and breakfast....people were exercising or doing grocery shopping.

The start of my expedition, walk to the nearest subway station 20 minutes away...

Luban Road as I head to Xing Guang.

Got my fix - Chinese Leica (Shanghai 58-II) and a brick of ERA100. More Xing Guang pics.

Luban Rd again as I head back to the subway....

A convoy of micro electric cars as I surfaced from the subway in the Xintiandi area.

I think I lost my bearing....but nice scene.

Electric mopeds, scooters and bicycles...be careful crossing the street, they are very quiet. It reminded me of the Avantis, Citroens and Rover P6s in the movie Gattaca.

Finally found Xintiandi...

...time to leave, have to see The Bund and Huangpu river before sunset.

Nice set. If you get a chance to go again fairly near the lu ban lu market is a place called tian zi fang. You would have really enjoyed it there. Its old architecture, and the place is full of shops featuring some amazing real black and white prints.

How odd, in one of your first set there is a woman "rollerskiing" down the path. It's basically summer training for nordic skiing, common in some areas, but this was not something I"d expect here!

This was my first trip to China and was mightily impressed with Shanghai! Having lived in NYC as a student IMO it is comparable, as well as to other cosmopolitan cities I've visited like Tokyo, London and Berlin.

@dfoo, thanks for the tips - old architecture and flea market B&W photos, wow...that will be in my agenda if I get to visit again.

@sebastel, thanks for putting my "memory" on track, you seem to know the city very well.

@DabCan10, Shanghai folks seem to be very health conscious, I saw people exercising (jogging, walking, cycling and etc.) early morning and after work, the roller skiing surprised me too, but realized the city is well above the equator to have snow/winter, who knows maybe they have ski resorts in the north?

@Vickko, I had very limited time to explore the Expo site because on my second day, we were rehearsing the whole day for a performance in the evening. The following day we flew back to Manila.

Here's a photo I took from the back of the theater/conference hall at the Expo site:

There were a lot of "Expo info booths" scattered all over the city. These young volunteers were very gracious, helpful and at least one of them spoke English. Actually even in the subway, I asked directions from at least 3 people in their 20s-30s and they were very accommodating and spoke good English. A very tourist friendly city!

as far as i remember, city hotel is in city center (nanjing lu).
you most probably go to people square, take line number 8 to the south (3 stops) and change at lujiabang lu to line number 9.
go westward, the second stop is dapuqiao.

the exit from dapuqiao metro station leading directly to tian zi fang is not open yet, so you need to take another one and go around the block.

I'd probably just take a cab. Shanghai cabs are cheap, and the drivers are honest. From nanjing lu to taikang lu is probably ~15 RMB.

The Nanjing road is very nice at night, I have some pictures of the floodlit buildings will see if I can find it . Nice collection there.

Nanjing road is exclusively for tourists and non-shanghainese 🙂 At least these days there are no pick pockets around, but there are lots of massage/tea girls who want to con you out of your hard earned dollars.
