Here's another from the Stevenot Vineyard in Murphys, California (zinfandel, I think):

Waiting on Maitani
I am out the door in 2 minutes, headed to HEW to pick up 2 or 3 months of wine club shipments, plus 1/2 case of '04 Showcase Cab Sauv & 1 bottle of '05 icewine fermented in American oak. It's the only icewine I've ever tasted with pepper notes. YummmmmmmEEEEEE!!!J J Kapsberger said:Grapes on the vine at Hillebrand Estates Winery, Niagara on the Lake, ON

So that's where you get your name from. I'd actually wondered about that whenever I'd seen it.
My favorite Niagara winery, both for quality and for service. Best restaurant meal I've ever had was at HEW in the fall of 2002. The chef had scoured local places for produce and put on the menu a beautiful creamy pumpkin pasta sauce served with foie gras (before I knew what that yummy stuff really was). I forgot which wine I had, but it went beautifully with the meal. HEW isn't at all overly careful about the amount of wine they pour in your glass for sampling (you'd swear some of the other places measure your sample to the 1/1000 of a ml) and they don't charge for sampling if you eat in their restaurant. But I'm sure you know all of this.

Yes, that's the origin of my handle. I've been Wine Club member (formerly Hillebrand By Request) since about 2001-02 ... can't remember, so I never have to pay for tastings, and in the restaurant my table gets free tastings, up to a limit of 7 guests.J J Kapsberger said:So that's where you get your name from. In addition to collecting my monthly shipments & Futures bottles, I tasted the '06 oak fermented Trius Chardonnay. It's absolutely superb, and will be maturing nicely for several years to come.
You are right about the quality and service levels at Hillebrand. There are some smaller wineries in Niagara that are producing stellar wines, often surpassing Hillebrand, but the prices are not moderate, and the quantities available are pretty small. Some of these wineries are beginning to produce some remarkable pinot noir, from all reports.
But the best red I've ever had was the 1995 Showcase Cabernet Franc (unfilitered) from HEW. Absolutely stunning.

To my nose there's a typical note in Niagara region Cab Franc wines (varietal or blend): bell peppers. Love it. Do you get that as well?

This will get you a $2000 fine and up to a year in jail in VT. Supplying alcohol to a minor is a serious offense hereabouts. More insanity from our citzen legislature.

What the heck is that, Pitxu? Looks like the aftermath of some Wiccan feast, which was underattended.
