Thanks everyone for the great advice, especially the food tips.

The consensus appears to be,

1. Get a AAA travel map
2. Use the secondary roads (blue roads?)
3. Must find and use Route 66
4. Watch the weather (still, cold maybe snow). Good tip we are experiences a heat wave at present.
5. Catch the southern reaches of the Grand Canyon

Some good tips also on getting a feel for 'Americana'. That's exactly what I want. Some people say that Australia is similar and I suppose it is in many ways, but I want to find what is different and what makes it America above all else.
