I have been underrating this lens for a long time! Initially I was offput by its weird color shifting tendencies, but I can't believe how good some of these came out:
I used a yellow filter on the first one.

Yes and a some with great J12. Some of the FSU lenses are just stunning.

I shot mine on a trip to Europe once, and a Russian friend noticed it and said, "that's not considered a good lens at all in Russia..." But you know what? It's worked great for me!

I have a black one that I use on my (black) Bessa R. Unlike other FSU lenses, it has clickstops, AND the aperture ring turns in the right direction as defined by the metering LED's in the finder. It looks appropriate, and works great.

That first picture looks like it could be taken with a modern AF kit 50. I can't get over the sharpness of this thing. I generally don't care about sharpness as much, but for the price you can't beat it.

It is supposed to be so sharp since it has lanthanum glass which provides a better breaking index. Further these lenses are very well coated. I too like it for its click stops. IMHO it renders much better/nicer than the old f 3.5 lenses (industar, fed and even Leitz elmar)

Is the I-61 an original Russian design, or is it based off of some other lens? BTW, I have the Panda version.

Love mine...but the barrel wobbles a bit. I find the contrast to be a bit too strong for my liking in BW, but perfect for color.

i feel the exact opposite about it, i love high contrast b&w. my barrel is also quite wobbly. hey - it was included with my $30 fed 4, no real complaints.

I have a black one with click stops. Haven't used it in awhile. I think i'll carrry it out with the bessa R this weekend. Love that B&W shot.

Here is an old one from my 61LD...my first M lens. Got it from fedka for around 20 dollars. I like having the click stops on the aperture ring.
To each his own, and I'll be first to admit that high contrast is pretty popular these days (some Sony cameras even have art filters for this effect). It sure can look good for many images, but if you have a chance to pick up or borrow a lower contrast lens, give it a go! You might really be surprised the subtle impact of enhanced tonality, and you will still have the option to blow those mid greys away in printing (wet or dry).

I've been intrigued by Elmars for this reason (lower contrast). Are there any affordable lower contrast lenses I could look into? How are the Industar 50 and 22s?

I have one in M42, it's exactly the same as the LTM and M39 ones. Sharp and not far behind the I-61. Very small and light too. I don't think I have photos to hand and I'm over my posting limit it seems, so I'm unable to show you any shots.

It's alright, I really love that contrasty look and buying one will only put me back $15-30 dollars, so I think I'm gonna just go for it.

I have two of the Industar 50 3.5 in M42, they are quite remarkable , I used one on my spotmatic swapping it around with the Takumar standard 50 f2.0 which is the same lens as the 1.8, I could not tell the difference as to which lens had taken which shot. Everyone should have one of these Russian beauties, tiny too.
