Industar 61 -- help

Ok, I'm new to the forum & have 2 61's that need a lube for sticky focusing. I am following Matt Denton's guide (great stuff) but on one lens I just can't get one of the set screws on the focus ring off. I'm afraid I will strip the top off the screw if I keep doing it. Yes I have the right sized screw drivers but this one screw just won't budge.

The other 61 is a tad smoother but I can't budge any of the screws on the rear ring (the 1st step in disassembly). I even tried leaving Liquid Wrench on the screws for a couple of days.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Manny. Did you manage to remove the set screws? I wish I have some ideas for ya.

If it was me, I'd just try torque that sucker out regardless if I strip the screw head. That's just me though. 😛 At least you have another one. 🙂

I think I messed up the alignment of my I61's threading. After I lubed and cleaned it, I set all of the screws and face and everything to the right place at infinity, and then when I screwed it back on, the arrow indicator is to 2 O'clock on the face of the LTM body. It seems something's shifted.... or messed up. Other than this, the lens work immaculately, despite there being a few specks of dust on the inside. Any ideas?

I tried 3 times with the blow dryer to no avail. The other 2 came out with a fuss. The screw just won't turn at all.

I have a second 61 that I'm scraping off the paint from the 1st set of screws (bottom of the lens) which is the first step in taking it apart.

I think I will be out of luck on both of them... but if I get lucky I'll post.

I'm not familiar with the I-61 but I'm sure the threading will be the same as any other 50mm lens. What you are implying is that it has a six-start thread. I have never actually counted them - I would have guessed four - but what you say seems reasonable. Therefore I submit that you are simply on the wrong thread and all you need to do is take it out, rotate 1/6 turn, and try again. Nothing seriously messed up.

What concerns me is that you say the lens works immaculately. What I hope you mean is that it turns nice and smooth, and that is all.

On the three lenses I have serviced of late, FED f3.5, Leitz Summar, and rigid I-50, there has never been any doubt about the correct installation i.e. which thread start is the correct one. The older lenses send a clear signal with the infinity lock. On the I-50 the limit of travel is just past the infinity position. That is when it is screwed right home, which is clear and obvious. Essentially, if it looks wrong, it is wrong.

I recently posted a note on the I-50. If the I-61 iris ring rotates with the focus, you can bet both are mechanically the same and the post may be of value.

The lens works fine, and the last time I tried repairing my I50 fixed, I totally screwed up. Even though the threading seems "off," I think I'll leave this alone until I get a bit more proficient in DIY repairs. Appreciate your tips, I'll take them into account the next time I open this baby up!

Ok, after soaking the set screws on the focus ring with nail polish remover and liquid wrench they finally gave & I was able to remove the collar. However, pne of the bottom set screws (underneath the lens) is still frozen, so more soaking & heating with a hair dryer and maybe in another week I can finally get to clean & relube the focus on one 61.

The other is cooperating even less.. well one lens at a time I guess.

BTW, I received a chrome Jupiter 8 that was supposed to be in excellent shape. Some definition of excellent ! Both the focus & f-stop rings need to be cleaned & lubed. However I think I'll pass on this one since those screws are all frozen too & I have a nice black Jup 8.
