Industars, Jupiters and other stuff

I have quite a few 50 mm lenses - Canon 1.9, 1.8, and 1.4, Olympus OM 3.5 macro, 1.8 and 1.4 of various versions, a VC Nokton 1.5, and of all of these, my favorite portrait lens on my Panasonic G1 is my Jupiter 3. It really is quite remarkable how different the rendering is between these lenses. If I could find a patient enough model, it would be fun to run through each of them for a side by side comparison in this role.

In my own subjective results and based on my usage, I would say the I 61 is better at everything IQ if you can deal with 3,5 speed.

The Industar-61 and Jupiters 3 - 8 are resp. of Tessar and Sonnar type; both giving excellent results.

Preferring one of them, is just a matter of personal, individual taste.

I agree. I have an I-61 that I had on my camera in Europe when I met a Russian friend. He took one look and said, "those are not considered a good Russian lens". Yet, it is very sharp, has nice out of focus rendering, and has click aperture stops if I recall. The sharpness is uncanny. But I was swayed by the talk, and bought a J-3 and J8 to try...

I have a Industar 22 collapsible, J8, and J9 for my Zorki 4. I got the J8 and liked it alot. It had a certain "liquid" look that I loved, but I haven't used it much since I got the Industar, mostly because I like how compact it is, and it has it's own special quality. I don't see a big difference in quality at the same apeture, though the J8 is certainly better suited to lowlight. Here's something recent from the Industar that really impressed me. Stopped down and quite sharp, even at the corners. I haven't done a systematic comparison ( have to do that too much at my day job!).

I have a number of Sonnar type lenses (J8 J3 and a Zeis Sonnar 1,5) and I just find I use the I61 more. I do find the Sonnars a bit more liquid but I seem to be leaning towards sharper lenses lately.
