Black ZM sitting on table at Q in San Francisco:
Server: wow that's an old looking camera. Is it old
Me: no not really. Just looks classic
Server: oh ok is it digital
Me: no its film
Server: oh its film?! That makes it old!
Me: <polite service industry smile> haha I suppose so, guess who's not getting a tip...

Sounds like your just trying to stiff a member of the working class. You're lucky you're not in New York.

This old thing? Haha thank you. Now what was your name again? I will be very generous when it comes to tipping...

No no I would never stiff anyone.
Well I did once. But one time in 14 years of going out to eat isn't too bad now is?
But, I do feel that service should be more than just carrying food from kitchen to table. Luckily and legally tipping isn't mandatory. Even when it says that gratuities for groups larger than 6 are automatically tacked on.
when in NYC I just bought food at Dean and Deluca twice a day

Hell I told a couple of teenagers the other day that my camera uses film. They had never heard of that before. I told them it was the latest technology. one of them said Far Out and high fived me.

Seriously dude, its a camera, its inanimate and not tipping a clueless waiter/waitress simply for trying to talk to you about your camera and calling it "old" is really on the PS3-xbox360-fanboy-club level.

I had the feeling the OP was joking. Small talk and internet postings are so easily misinterpreted. Happens to me all the time

Next time you visit Alexandria, Virginia- go to "Bilbo Baggins" in Old Town. Not only did the waiter come over to see my M3, he went and got one of the younger waitresses that was taking a photography course to see it.
And he was not even waiting on us.
Waiting for Dessert at Bilbo Baggins...

My M5s need red dots!
I've been fortunate in that serving staff are always complimentary about my gear. And I tip them well...

Now that's funny.
I was surprised today when I found someone who used to do film, including 4x5, but had never seen or even heard of a film pack. I must be older than I thought. My first instruction in 4x5, that was what we used for part of our graduation. We also had to make a contact print with a small contact printer. That was only 43 years ago. Yeah, I guess I am old.

someone once told me the best way to get good, no great service when you go out to eat is to give your waiter a five spot ($5) before the meal and say there is more later. Haven't tried it yet.

They have a pretty good beer selection. Wish they gave extra-large servings of beer to film camera users!

A coworkers daughter was a waitress in NY, and the customers there treated her (and waiters/waitresses in general) like sheit! From her stories, it was the customers who you had to watch out for when in NY, not the servers!
Its kind of a crap system, you have to pay extra for the servers just to do their job, but on the other hand, the servers dont get paid much and rely on those tips...
it is what it is, but if I have to ask for bread or a refill 3 times and dont get it until I finish my meal, the tip will reflect that....I have only done it once like another poster said, and I still felt a bit guilty doing it...but oh well
Oh yeah, and I read the little conversation as the OP joking with the server that there will be no tip based on the camera insult...

Any waiter that can't tell a Rolleiflex E from a Rolleiflex F automatically gets stiffed here. It's a hard town for that!
Waiters are paid to fawn. No fawn, we pack it up and go to Jack In the Box.

The best camera is one that still works!
Not service related but once I had someone spot my Ikon and say ... "Wow a Zeiss, can I have a look?"
They then turned the camera over and noticed it was made in Japan and handed it back to me disdainfully saying ... "Oh it's Japanese, I thought it was a real Zeiss!"

Here in New Orleans waiters are held in high regard. My nephew has made a great living serving at Commanders Palace. BTW he has a degree in computer science. Even at the less expensive restaurants certain long time waiters are known and have their own following.
We also have several restaurants which are popular because their food is good and the waiters are known to be surly.
