I've found that the Sling available from Leica Goodies (www.leicagoodies.com) works beautifully on the R-D1.

Hi Bruce
I tried the SLING on my R-D1, too, but then had problems to open the SD card compartment. How do you manage the card changing? No problems? Just curious.

Didier:

I had trouble with the SLING too at first. Now I simply grab the end of the SLING that covers the SD card compartment and pull it up towards the top of the camera. I hold it there while I swap out the SD card. A little cumbersome but I really like the SLING so I don't find it to be a big problem.

Yeah that grip looks interesting, I with Tom Abrahamson would make an R-D1 fit grip for us, I prefer his style, but Ill take anything as long as its for a reasonable amount of money.
The best hand straps are made by Gordy in Washington. http://www.electricedge.com/gordy_s_straps/ Very nice, well made, break in very well, secure as hell, and CHEAP. Hes a nice guy too.

i ordered one from paul, the original fm grip, back in mid april, still haven't got it yet. Must be lot of fabricating, cutting and molding. Can't wait to get it on my R-D1.

I finally took the time to file the edges off the FM-Grip and installed it on the RD1. Wow! it's amazing what a little grip like this will do to the handling of this camera, simply incredible. I cannot believe I waited that long...

I have been using Luigi's gorgeous half case with built-in grip but it always felt like it added just a tiny bit too much bulk to the RD1 for my hands. With the camera now "naked" + the FM-Grip, the RD1 feels just right to me, much more nimble. It was worth the cost of the grip, the metal file, the 10 minutes of filing, and a small callus forming on my thumb from filing :)

I've never had mine off. I had the same experience as you. A case was a bit much. The grip hasn't left my camera since I went through the same experience as you. You should try covering it in leather, it makes a difference. I had a local shoemaker do it for me. :D

Jeff, for now I put some gaffer tape around the grip handle but am definitely planning to wrap it in leather soon as I can. I have to say (again :)) this was a GREAT idea.

You both inspired me to contact Eric Paulsen. While he's out of the FM grip, he pointed me to a source in Japan that I'm tracking down (lemonsha.com) whom he supplies. I'm hoping to get one, do the mod, and see how I take to it.

Hey Mike, I hope it works for you. The filing (I did it while holding the grip to my knee) is not much fun but the result sure is worth it. I should have worn some gloves - the tiny metal shavings got into a little nick in my finger and it's now swollen :(

Here's a quick frontal shot of my leather covered FM grip.
