Introducing Fuji X100S

can't these guys focus on something at a different distance each time? they either don't move the camera at all, or they point at something else that is pretty much the same distance away.

Can't blame a sales person for making sure u c the best from their camera.. The independent reviews will be where we will really c if there are any issues.

What aids are there in the latest X100 firmware for quick adjustment focusing distance in your typical scale focus use? Can you adjust the distance without going into menus and without pointing the camera at whatever is at that distance? The X100s still lacks manual focus scales on the lens barrel, which would of course be the ideal solution.

I'm thinking whether this camera might be one alternative to solve the issue of getting a fast 35mm equivalent lens with great ergonomics for my M8. I will anyway typically carry two bodies, so that is not an issue, and this camera will be cheaper (and more versatile) than a Summicron 28. The new split image solution has some real promise in improving the manual focus performance, but it doesn't address quick scale focusing.

Distance scale with real-time depth of field estimation on LCD, EVF, and OVF. All the X-cameras have it. Switch to MF, turn the ring to desired distance via the scale. x100 is just a bit sluggish in how fast the ring will change the distance. X-pro and XE are extremely good.
 
Thanks, looks quick and easy enough. Now I will just need to sit and wait for the opportunity to try the X100s.
 
There's a (short) hands-on now posted at dpreview. Adds little to what we know already, but in the comments one of their contributors remarks that he believes that Fuji will update the basic X100 firmware to allow focus peaking.

Not sure how useful it will be given the lousy manual focus throw, but better to have it than not.
 
I have no idea - but I am guessing it's the focus peaking, and that alone, that they're discussing. And as Britton points out, the possibility is unconfirmed.

According to the utube video I saw about the camera, the new processor improved everything from startup time, af speed, file write times, etc...

I also would suspect and hope that w/ the higher density evf, the issues people have complained about on the web related to fast movement of the camera (swinging motions) causing slight jerkiness is gone... Since I never use my cameras in this fashion, never been an issue for me..

The video was during a Fuji rep demo and explanation to a group of writer cluster around him at ces.

My understanding is that the evf is the same as teh X-e1 which people have seemed to like. I used an evf in low light with motion that is perfect. I think that is the nature of the beast.
 
i must say i am somewhat disappointed that the camera is lacking Face Detection. i know "Face Detection" and "RFF" are like oil and water but damn it, i hate it when i ask someone to take a picture of me (and my fds) with the X100 and it turns out sh#t because of the focusing. i guess i could prefocus / zone focus but really that's not optimal. it usually means i need to take another camera (most likely inferior) to capure an image of people when those are the most important photos.
 
Face detection is enormously useful. The iPhone 4S/5 has a good implementation, for example. Hoping my next X-cam has it.

Well, one more reason why I carry always a P&S additionally to a serious camera. I put it on full Auto and give it to friends to make some shots; also of me.
I never hand out a X100 (set to single center focus point) or an analog RF, because they will AF exactly within two heads with the X100. Or look bemused to the RF patch asking what to do. If it's not a P&S (smartphone), they are overwhelmed.

understood and that's what i do too ... but it's always a bummer to have important people pix with a sub-optimal camera
