Introducing the Leica M 10-R

One of the most important aspects of using an M camera is keeping things simple so that photography can happen smoothly and without any complications. I could be wrong here, but I feel that a 40MP sensor would complicate things for me. Is my computer powerful enough to quickly handle large sized images, and do I really want to worry about such an issue? The M10 seems to have struck a point at which Leica has perfected the M for photographers in general. Buying a regular M10 is now a good time, as some owners of M10 cameras will unload their cameras to now order an M10-R.
The type of camera has little to do with the qualities of the images captured, as you all know. Still, the development of new cameras by Leica is a positive thing. It is admirable to create such a technological accomplishments in a relatively compact package.

I have no regrets at all for buying a regular M10 and not wait a day to plan ordering the newer M10-R.

But the basic feeling is that yes the price for the M10-R sounds a lot, but it is a heck of a camera at the same time. ..

No dust reduction (total lol in 2020), no IBIS.

It just a heck in terms of camera.

All kidding aside, any of my film Ms just feel so good to use. It's weird. There is just something about the construction, heft and balance that Leica has just nailed.
I don't have any other camera that has that magic feeling. None of my Nikon F series (and I got em all) etc. Not even my Rolleiflexes.

They are the only people making such a system, and they are gem like. It's that or some Mirrorless with lenses the size and weight of artillery shells. I have my lovely old Leicas but if I ever went properly digital I wouldn't baulk at buying one, and I am the antithesis of the lifestyle buyer.

The more choice the better!

Once you spend the day at Leica in Wetzlar, and you get to meet some their top executives, and you tour the labs, you become supporter and user. It is beyond "just a lifestyle", I dare to say. The history of top notch quality in design and construction is awesome. It has a price.

You can buy brand new for $3400 at any of the big online stores. I have one up for $5k including the 23mm and get no takers. It's more than half price but not my too much.

The prices are astronomical - unless they are not astronomical because you can afford them. But what I wonder is whether digital camera manufacturers - even Leica - are on a kind of resolution escalator attuned to the improving technics of screens and transmission - as well as competition from cheaper media (eg phones).

I think Leica is one of the few camera companies that are ahead of the curve in dealing with phones. They're a niche company in a niche market and have an aspirational product that is priced appropriately. Leica isn't losing customers to phones.

Everyone else is still losing customers to phones, and I can only see their prices escalating as they start to produce lower volume, higher-end cameras.
The consumer camera market is gone.

I didn't realize they put it on sale again. So, you bought for $5000 new? I guess if it's selling at $3500 new now...it would be around $3000 used? I never see them for less than that ever. I would sell your body and lens separately... that always gets the best prices. Or wait until it is $4500 again.

We are already seeing it... look at the new Canon bodies and lenses. Canon R5...$3800 with a lot of new $2000+ lenses. It is effecting the low end too though. Now we are starting to see $1000-1400 brand new FF cameras. And everything is BIG! The lenses are huge. I'm not sure what is going on... but it seems like big is in right now. Even the Leica SL and lenses. Maybe that's a reaction to cellphones too?

I agree with above statements. I do not comment about lifestyle but for sure using Leica means to appreciate a specific photographic style and approach, specially with the M series.

I didn't buy the M8-9-240 ...because not convinced but when I tried the M10 I bought it. It's still more than ok for me and I do not plan to upgrade to the R. If I had no digital M probably I would evaluate it against the 10-P, not sure.

AS for the prices I have two comments: first is that where I live the top model Canikon are only slightly lower, ok different cameras and technologies and size, but when you share the M philosophy this is not the point. Second comment is I have friends who spend less money than an M cost in the beginning, then they upgraded to the new version, they decided that it was ok but they needed that special lens, then a new version came out with special edition and they absolutely needed that... in the end they spent more money than I spent 🙂

Yes, I agree it is expensive. Passions always cost money and time!

Leica was never "just a camera." Leica is the archetype setter, always the high end of lens and optical design, and always costly as a result.

Lifestyle is a late 20th century term that is now applied to everything you do. It is another one of those ambiguous filler terms that cannot be pinned down to an objective metric, like "image quality".

People who buy into 'lifestyle' as having some specific, understandable, and accepted meaning are making an error in judgement. There are many different things that can be called "lifestyle choices" that conflict with one another, and there is no way to say that one of them is always better than some other.

People who buy Leica equipment are buying a highly regarded and expensive tool capable of making excellent photographs; whether they do or not is a matter of their skills in using it and their photographic vision. Whether other tools that are less expensive can make the same excellent photographs is irrelevant unless their primary criteria for comparison is what they perceive to be value for money.

Many years ago when there was no internet existing: I would go over each ad in Shutterbug. Ads had usually no photos of the item being listed for sale. Just a few words ... Summicron for Leica M ... and a price. I was always struck by M lenses costing more used than R lenses then. What was special about Leica M compared to Leica R I would ask myself. Of course, it was just dreaming of getting one day a Leica. I had my Canon F1N and I was happy.
