Hi all,
Thanks for the welcome. I'm glad to be part of this community. Hopefully I'll eventually get some shots that are good enough to share.
Interestingly, I received my Nikon D70s digital SLR today -- and don't get me wrong, it's a very fun toy -- but it's so different from the Leica that I have a hard time comparing them. It's like they're two totally different species. I think differently looking through each of them. This is, I am sure, obvious to someone who is knowledgeable about photography but for someone who has always used autofocus, well...
I've browsed some of the retail websites, and am bewildered by the choices out there. If I am in the market for a lens hood and a plastic lens cap (because I dropped the metal one yesterday, it rolled down the sidewalk and I almost had a heart attack), where can I find cheap ones that will work, and must they be specifically for the Summicron or will any 50 mm thingie do? (sorry -- my questions are going to be extremely stupid for a while)

Do you have a local camera shop? You should be able to buy a generic plastic cap that clips inside the filter-ring at the front of the lens - they are quite cheap. Otherwise, measure the diameter inside the filter ring (39mm for a Summicron lens usually) and send an email to one of our forum sponsors - eg Tony Rose at Popflash.

if you can get cheap accessories to bring out on your shoot, instead of bringing the original ones, then do so. i'm talking about hoods, straps, lens caps, leather case, etc.
obviously, the original ones would really cost you alot compared to the cheap, generic ones. not to mention, the sentimental value of these.
i guess the only original 'leica' products you would bring are the body and lenses. check this out.

hello MelanieC! welcome
my father and my father's father let me use their Ricoh SLR and Olympus folder camera when i was small... in high school i got an olympus OM and replace with a Minolta AF SLR; and then somehow i stop taking pictures for many years... i got hold of the Minolta 2 or 3 years ago again and try to make some pictures with it; i then realise part of the reason why i stopped in the first place:
it is too "auto" for me to know what exactly is happening: the auto-exposure, the auto focusing with a zoom lens makes me forget about moving around, composing and think of the visual effects of aperture/shutter combination
but moving around, composing and think of the effects of aperture/shutter combination are what taking pictures is about
after some experience of RF, i save up and get myself an M4, i go out with either a 35mm or a 50mm and that is the way i am practising now, i am not as serious as many about photography, but i gather that my friends and family likes the portraits i did for them and we share some memories browing a photo album, in print, not on a screen

wow! you guys are lucky...the only cams i got from my relatives are the vivitar and kodak 110 P&S! hahahahaha!
