I could guess a reason for some people
Some good people
who left officially the site
but they are addicted so they HAVE to come back once in a while
but are ashamed to do so in public
how 'bout this reasoning?

I removed my gallery and my avatar after a political correctness debate, I activated the invisible mode for some time, too.

Sound reasoning - but it can only account for a small percentage of the 'invisibles'. Some people have left but there aren't legions of them. Right now, there are three reg. members and five guests reading this thread.
EDIT: this is referring to Pherdinand's comment.

Joe,
I don't use the invisibility cloak here, but I do on another forum where I'm a bit more active. Here's my reason: If you link to the profile of an online member, you can track their movements. I would rather not have people looking over my shoulder, as it were.

Do you have many invisible friends Joe
I didn't know this setting existed till reading this. Personally I'm not bothered but have not really been in active in areas of contention either. I bit once and that was enough.

Lol, but considering some of Joe's past posts, I wouldn't worry too much about that. Arrrrggghhh! Sorry I said that, the mentally conjured photo remains painful. :bang:

Never knew there was an invisible option before now. Also never knew about the user cp option. Quite an educational day for me.

So maybe it would make sense to show those user's status as 'Invisible' - so they would notice that setting?
Anyway this status doesn't make that much sense for me since it must be based on some statistics like 'was logged in x Minutes ago'. You can't rely on someone being really online, and so you can't on someone being offline.
I would prefer to see the country of origin instead of this online status - it was there some time ago and seems gone now..

Big deal.
I can see dead people.

I use my inviso because I typically have the page open in it's own window (it's my favorite site, after all) but I'm not always here. Especially if someone sends you a pm, it's kind of misleading to imply you are actively "online" when you're actually cleaning the bathroom.

My M5s need red dots!
Adrenaline rush, perhaps? Love for dangerous situations? Feeling like the stealth photographer/stealth forumer?
Who knows. I've seen the setting but I didn't click on it. Why not? Why at all click on it?

From time to time I clean all the cookies off my computer. The next time I sign on to RFF I'm a guest. As soon as I notice I log in, but for a time I'm a guest. Perhaps the same situation occurs with other members.

There's a difference between not logging in (you are a guest) and logging in with the invisible option selected (your name doesn't appear in active member list, but mods can still see it)
