I went to the big box camera store today to get some 120 film, and left with more than I had planned to. The store was selling the new iPhone 5S, and as my old cell phone has been getting long in the tooth, I decided to upgrade.

I have shot a lot of photos with my beat up iPhone 4, and I have been quite happy with the quality. The photos I sometimes post of interesting gear I find is usually taken with that phone. So far I am enjoying the new one.

It scratches up very easily, even or especially in a case. My 4 still looks brand new and never in a case. I'll wait for the 6 perhaps.

I just picked up a 5S yesterday at my local AT&T store. My wife inherited my 5. The white 5 lived in my front pants pocket everyday for 13 months without a case. It has one faint scratch on the Apple logo.

I got the 645 Pro camera app just now. This lets you save flat TIFFS (among other things.

Enjoy your new 5S.

Since you don't own a 5S how do you know other then repeating the echoes from the internet...

Apple offers you the option for a plastic case like on your old 4. Its the 5C

What a curious contribution from you. Is anyone there with you? I am not alone here at the computer screen all the time. I have friends. I have colleagues. I have family. They all have phones, mostly the iPhone. Some of them are as fussy me. I see their phones. I am surprised how delicate the finish of the iPhone 5S is and I would be sorry to pay for one. I didn't know this was an acknowledged, not rumoured, problem on the internet. I see it with my own eyes. Having the case does not protect it. Just pocket lint and occasional dust seem to damage the finish. The 5C is ugly. I don't want that.

I have never seen any metal that doesn't scratch...

I'm worried about bad and eventually exploding batteries. Things at this price tag don't have any excuses for a bad batery.

Gee, one case in China with the iPhone 5 (not 5s or 5c) and you worry. I wouldn't use a phone period, if I was of the worrying kind: radiation. From what I've seen, that risk is much higher then any battery overheating 😱

Not a iPhone user btw, I hate the cult like attitude of a lot of iPhone users.....

I have had my 5S for five or six weeks, so far no scratches. I do keep it in a case, and carry it in my pocket. I have no complaints about the phine so far.

As a sidenote, my girlfriend bought me an iPad Air yesterday. It's a big improvement over my first-generation iPad, and I am enjoying it very much.

... my 5 has rattled around in my trouser pocket since it came out and it's fine so far ... and now with the new OS the off button sounds just like a M2 shutter running at 1/15 ...

ipad air also has exploded in a store.
only one, for now.

I'm not so big that I'd need two or more to smash me. When they learn to make things right they can send me a booklets again.
