Irrational 28mm GAS

Yes, there's less than 1 cm difference in length between the Biogon and Ultron. The smallest Elmarit is only about 2 mm longer than the Biogon.

Zeiss 28/2.8 Biogon = 37.7 mm
Leica 28/2.8 Elmarit = 41.4 mm
CV 28/1.9 Ultron = 63.1 mm

You have to be careful about how the measurements are taken, and there are at least two different sized 28mm Elmarits, maybe more. Anyhow, my Ultron sticks out about 47 mm from the camera body. The Biogon sticks out 37.7 mm. That's a difference of 9.3 mm.

Attached is a shot from earlier this evening. R-D1, ISO 800, 1/3 stop less than f/4, exposure 1/21 s. Cleaned up and sharpened a bit with Noise Ninja, then a bit of local contrast enhancement.

This lens is curing me of my adiction to 'cheap but good' lenses. The last dozen or so London shots in my gallery were also taken with this lens.

Ok... You got the best deal. True. I got an Elmarit that needed repair. So, Richard... forget about new glass. The 28mm focal length will give you a lot of dead space. At least, that's my problem...

Francisco, you just have a bit of a challenge to work on, there! 🙂 The wider the lens, the harder this is to solve, I think. (Here's another 28 Biogon-G shot, in expectation it's representative of the new ZM model...)

I haven't noticed dead space particularly... Maybe its just that particular lens Francisco and you're being punished for not picking up the Hexanon! 😉

I'm finding that 28 and 50 are a great two lens combination. 🙂

About the dead space... Yep! It's a challenge I'm trying to meet. It simply happens that I'm too used to the 35mm width, and the 28mm was a bit too wide for me in the beginning. Now... I think I'm getting used to it.

But then, again, Richard, you'll get lots of dead space with a 28mm! 😀

i used to think 28 was the perfect focal length- why go wider i thought? then i went to 21 and found that especially nice. and now the 15/4.5 is intriguing. think of the 28 as near normal field of view, 35 as normal, and 50 as nearing telephoto...guess its all relative.
oh yes, think 28/3.5 for small and compact and tack sharp, and it fits on thread mount and adapters to bayonet...28/3.5

Oh... not helping... I have and love both the 28/2.8 and 21/2.8 Zeiss Contax G lenses. They are awesome. If I ever get the ZI, they will be coming along as well. But in the end, if you need an excuse not to buy... ask you wife: "Hey love, do you mind if I spend a few car payments on a lens?" Works, but is no fun.
