I would like to know if is there any canon 50 mm lens comparable with a summicron 50 mm f.2.
Many people talk very well about its quality.
What do you think

Compared to the the collapsible and rigid Summicrons that I have used, the Canon 50/1.4 is very competitive. Similar in resolution and contrast to the rigid, IMO. At f2, the Summicron has a bit nicer OOF, but the Canon is faster and usually costs less. For "normal" situations, at f2 and above, I would have a very hard time telling the two lenses apart, even given a very large print.

The only reason to use one of the older Summicrons over the Canon is size, IMO.

More modern Summicrons (v3 and above) are a different story. Shorter min. focus, more contrast. More expensive. But then you might consider a Hexanon 50/2 instead.

Sean Reid has some tests that you could look at.

Roland.

50mm f1.4 serenar v. Summicron 3rd version (Canadian) This Summicron is the "least desireable" of Summicrons (I disagree with that statement completely...as if there is such a thing as least desireable!). Obviously, the Serenar is faster, cheaper, and larger. The Summicron is sharper with better Bokeh. With that stated the Serenar is EXTREMELY sharp & with nice bokeh. IMHO.

I also find my V3 Summicron to be a great performer wide-open.

The Canon 50/1.8 and 50/1.4 are both 1-2-2-1 Planar formula lenses, as are the latest two Summicrons. I find them higher contrast than the Collapsible Summicron and Type I Rigid Summicron. The 50/1.8 is about as sharp as the collapsible, but the my Rigid has the edge.

There are several versions of the Leica Summi 50 2.0. They all have somewhat different image signatures. The Canon is definitely sharp, but I doubt it is as sharp wide open, and it won't give images like the older Leica 50 glass. Whether you see that as a good thing or a bad thing depends on what you are after. For myself, the only way to know for sure would be to buy both lenses and sell the one I liked less after looking at the pics. I doubt you can go wrong w/ either.

I did the mistake of selling my Canon 50mm 1.4 when I went from Bessa R to Leica M6. Stupid mistake. The collapsible Summicron I've been using since then is totally fine, but I really think the Canon was just as good, at least for my use, plus it has that extra stop. And concidering the price (I'm pretty sure you can get one for less than $300 on the EvilBay), I'd say it's really good value for money.
