is CZ = CZJ ?

Uih, that's a long story. To make it short, Carl Zeiss Jena are prewar lenses and after the war GDR production for several cameras but not for Contax/Yashica mount.

CZJ stands for Carl Zeiss Jena. The former DDR factory.
I don't know the fine details, but I think the Carl Zeiss factory continued the optical works in the west, therefore the east got another name. Nowadays, I don't know how separate or united they are.

As the Soviet army took over eastern Germany, some of the managers and technicians at the Carl Zeiss plant in Jena went West. They eventaully settled in Oberkochen and set up as Carl Zeiss Oberkochen. Those that stayed behind or were trapped were eventually sent to the USSR to help the Soviets set up the German optical plants that were acquired as part of war reparations. I think Lytkarino-LZOS was one of those plants. When they were allowed to return home, they rejoined the reconstituted and nationalized Carl Zeiss Jena company in Jena, DDR. They produced lenses originally as Carl Zeiss - Jena. They ended up in a trademark dispute with Carl Zeiss - Oberkochen and lost. After that they produced lenses as CZ Jena, CZJ and aus Jena. It seems to have depended on their destination market since some countries like the US were stricter on trademark controls.

Today they are again part of the Carl Zeiss company HQ'd in Oberkochen. A fascinating period in recent history.

Paul, reading this document is something of an experience, thank you for sharing, it's shivery to enlighten myself on this particular odyssey/tragedy/resurrection, it's like a zoom on the tragedies of that time. Thank you very much..
