I picked up 4 rolls of this stuff at walmart for 6 bucks and change. Is it a good film? Seems pretty cheap but I heard Fuji was good. Comments?

It's great, I use it all the time. One of the most popular color films made. Some will probably tell you to overexpose it for better color but I shoot it at 400 and I'm happy with the color I get. What will you be shooting it in?

I use it often and most of the time expose at 200. I find that exposing at 400 gets darker colors with some blocked shadows.

... What will you be shooting it in?

Mostly a Nikon FM right now, 24mm, The TeleTouch and my dad will run some in his Retina IIc.

Actually I think it was 8 something for the 4 rolls so its like 2.12 a roll which I think is a decent price. I dont process C41 at home so I found CVS will do it for $2 a roll just the negatives (which is all I want for scanning anyway) 24 frames each. its like 16 cents a frame or so.

It's what I learned to shoot on, and what I use to test all new cameras and lenses with. I've been able to get some really amazing color with it so long as I expose it correctly.
Also the fact that it's so readily available just about everywhere helps, too.
Rite Aid is currently running a sale on it this week, buy one get one free 4 pack boxes for $17.

It's perfectly fine film. Nothing special like Portra, but my daily go-to film. Though I suggest holding out for 36-exposures rolls as the processing costs are the same.

Not always. Pro Photo in Portland charges the same but my local Walgreens and Fred Meyer charge more for 36. That works for me because all of the film sold locally is usually 24 exposures.

I suggest finding somewhere local with a good price and keep byung your film there. If you keep buying it they will keep stocking it hopefully.

good stuff. Took 60 rolls of this to a two month trip in southeast asia. Be careful in low light situations, worth overexposing a bit (for scanning at least).

Looks good converted in BW too! Sorry no color samples in the gallery ATM, I'll upload some later.

Great film but I go for Superia 800 for an extra stop for about same money which I occasionally also push +1, this is my color neg ISO1600 budget version.

Great film, nice colours can look a little strange underexposed and doesn't have the latitude of say Portra but I find it fine at 400.

It is a very good film. In the amateur C-41 film range all in all it is the best film due to my experience.
Finer grain, better sharpness and higher resolution compared to Kodak Gold 400 and Ultramaxx.
Higher resolution and sharpness compared to Portra 400 and Fuji Pro 400H, but significantly coarser grain compared to both. That is partly because of the higher contrast of Superia 400 compared to Portra and 400H. Superia also has a bit more saturation.
Sometimes that can be a problem with skin tones: People with a more pale skin look very good and healthy on Superia 400.
But people with a bit red skin tone look to reddish (a bit like sun burned) on Superia 400 (Portra, Gold 400 and Pro 400H are better in this respect).

But Superia 400 can not match the excellent detail rendition of Provia 400X (finest grain and highest resolution in the ISO 400 class). Provia 400X also has a better skin tone reproduction, and much better push capabilities.

Cheers, Jan

to me it is the best 400 film for color street photography. maybe not for portraits (due to skin color) or landscape (due to grain) but for anything else it rocks...

I think it's brilliant, overall. Inexpensive, well-balanced and at 400 ASA very versatile. Now that Reala and Astia are gone, it's my default choice.

best film so far. I tried portra 400, ektar 100, ultramax 400, NPH 400 and NPZ800 - Superia Xtra400 has best balance among them all. Best street shooting film.
