The "Vintage Look"...
There are several ancient photographs hanging in my home. The only clue to their age is the dress, hair style, etc. of the subjects. I have a snese that what many describe as the vintage look is in reality deterioration of the print as a result of age and improper storage.
I can state for a fact that my 100 year old lens combined with modern film and chemicals yields results indistinguishable from my most modern lens. Actually, the 100 year old lens may be sharper and/or have more contrast than my modern lenses.
On the other hand, contemporary wet plate images made with old lenses look remarkably like those from the earliest days of the media.
In my opinion, one thing holds true. I can spot a contact print from a large original every time. Warts, age, defects etc. aside, contact prints from big negatives produce photographs that are unmistakable.
