Is it just me or has there been some GREAT stuff for sale recently

It’s tough being a gear junkie! There have been a number of lenses calling my name right here in the RFF classifieds over the last few months - so far I have resisted their voices.

I have had my curiosity piqued recently due to many mentioned comparisons between RFF classifieds and EBay, and people saying that there tends to be an "RFF discount" in the classifieds here. So, for the last week I've been comparing sale prices here to those at EBay (comparing ONLY actual sale prices on items that sold in both places).

Conclusion: prices here are almost invariably above the EBay mean and median, often by a good deal. Now, this isn't necessarily a bad thing; here it is a lot less of a gamble. There's value in trusting the condition and history of an item, no doubt. I just found it was interesting vis a vis the recently oft-expressed perception that prices are better here.

I`ve seen some very uncommon LTM stuff sell for next to nothing..... (lenses)

But most of the really good stuf (rare) Leica stuff is`nt being sold now, the postwar US Army Stepped Rewind Leica IIIC`s and Leica IIIC K`s are all but totally GONE from the sellers market now...

no doubt the economy is playing its part. however i notice this time each year there is a flood of nice equipment for sale. I always tell myself i should put aside more money at this time, always seem to forget though, this is always the best time for camera gear i notice though

my stuff for sale has little to do with the current economy and more to do with just trimming the camera bag contents.

i'm happy with my dslr for some stuff and nothing will ever replace film and rf gear in my heart.

Unfortunately in my case, it is definitely because of the loss of my job and there is no prospect for a very long time. Selling all but the basic digital that I need for professional work including my studio setup.:bang:

The good news is I get to stay in a house for awhile but hopefully, I will have enough left over to get that M3!!!!😀

Gotta love this bohemian lifestyle.

Maybe it's time for the kit junkies to kick off a swap-shop. I have no idea of the exchange rate, but I'm sure the congescne... cognescient... sorry..... "them who know" ....understand the value of each other's kit in photographic terms rather than monetary, and therefore are able to ride out any kind of crunch while keeping the hobby going.

Ha! One can never have too many MPs. By the way, despite the economy, that beautiful Summilux 50/1.4 pre-asph Black Paint with 6-bit coding just sold. Still, a brand new (NOS, never mounted), Summicron 50/2 v3, with all original packaging... is tempting someone, I know! 😉

Andy, I'm tempted, but I bought another M3, an M8.2 (arrived today) and your 50 Rigid summicron in the last couple of weeks. I can't buy any more camera gear for a while. Even though camera equipment is a business expense for me, my wife will kill me.

Threads like this should be banned...!!

...because they inevitably end up bringing to surface the latent GAS that we all try to keep under control (or... not!): after reading it, I checked the classified and just got a IIIc (my second!)... it's all your fault! 😀

(not that I am unhappy, mind you - I am very much looking forward to its arrival!)

And the best stuff don't even turn up here: I've just picked up a black MP3 - like new - bought locally 🙂

Exactly! I picked up an used Hexar RF this morning, locally. Early Christmas!

I know, I know... It's not the most profound first post ever but I'm so happy I had to share! 😀

What a nice piece of equipment. And a good deal to boot!

I'm looking forward to testing it out this weekend in Barcelona...

I think I'm done for 2008 now... Mmmm, that new Ultron is tempting though. 🙄

Benjamin.

There is a lot of good used stuff for sale. A lot of Hexanon stuff, and a I've seen several Leica 35/2 ASPHs for sale around $1200-1300, which strikes me as a good price.

As far as ebay vs. RFF/LUG/etc., I think while ebay tends to be a bit cheaper on average, you can find better deals on RFF/mailing lists if you are patient.
