getting an Orion-15 Kiev fit for £95, which seems ok in comparison to some prices I have seen.

I am supposed to be saving to emigrate to Australia at the end of the year and the wife will not know, but what I want to know is.. If I do not get it now are they so rare that I may be waiting a good while to get another after this opportunity?

Any advise guys?

Honestly? If it was me? I'd tell the wife I found a really good deal on a lens, but I decided to pass on it because I know saving the money for the Australia thing is more important to both of us. There's lots of Orions. A good wife is rare. Invest in the wife.

IMHO because I'm a softy schmuck and don't mind.

I think she might notice that you're gone...(sorry had to say it  )and if you mean the lens, I agree with CVBLZ4.
Loved ones first and gear a distant second.

Sometimes lenses just appear (pop up) in drawers etc. or you can say that you have found it next to a rubbish bin. #;-]

I have a medium format projector which has just appeared at home in my photo cupboard the other day. What could have been done, I kept it.

Steven, A n Orion 15 in Kiev mount is probably one of the most uncommon FSU lenses.
Also an understanding wife is important.
Do I see a pattern here- FSU camera and a Russian wife?
I see that you had a Russian Orthodox Wedding (your photo gallery) Great photos!
I have been to a few Russian weddings as a guest and photographer(I am married)

BUY IT...you will NOT find one here in OZ!!!

...don't suppose you happened to stumble across a 21mm f4.5 Biogon??? :D

another option is to ask her if she would have a serious problem if you bought it.. altho what I'd do is describe a different lens that costs twice as much.. then once you get her reaction, you'll know about where you stand.. and if she's on the fence, you can then proceed to explain how you found 'an even better lens at half the price'.. build up need first.. then establish a value.. finally, cut the price.. that's how sales works ;)

looks like joe's got it down pat. but i'd go with cvblz4 here. lenses are easier to replace than a good wife. sure, letting go of a rare lens will give you sleepless nights, but losing a good wife will give you cold, sleepless nights, ALONE.

of course there's always a better way, which is to have your loving wife understand your needs and wants and support you in your decisions. i had that wonderful fortune of having a wife like that. unfortunately, she understood me too much and ended up having a GAS attack herself (which is still very much in effect right now). she has actually bought more cameras in a span of of two weeks than i had in a year!

wait a minute. Is your wife going to really notice that you have a new lens? My wife doesnt even notice if I have a new camera or not. Sometimes she'll ask me if it's new and I have had it for a year. Of course if you think this lens is going to cause some serious problems, then don't get it. But if your wife is not interested in cameras, I doubt that she'll notice that there is something different attached to your Zorkii. good luck

Well, most of my camera/lens deliveries come to my home address (I'm hardly at my office, as I usually either work from home or am on the road), so my wife generally sees the package first.

If I'm home (usually working upstairs), my 4 yr. old generally comes running upstairs "Daddy, you have a package, you have a package! Is it another old camera?"
