Is MP base plate OK to replace scratched M7 plate?

The "anti-panda" comment gave the initial post a real masturbatory sense, I thought. Not really a relevant piece of info at all, more of a "hey, check out my gear." I think that's totally fair as long as he's willing to acknowledge/ignore the same magnitude of irrelevant comments in return.

This is just a place for people who like RFF cameras (whether it's using them, collecting them, or both) to congregate and talk about RFF camera related things. No one is here handing out "invitations" to be put down because their interests differ from others. It's a diverse community, to be enjoyed, not judged.

I try to be very polite answering other peoples questions. Please do me the same courtesy.

I use this camera almost every day, and perhaps I love it more than an inanimate object should be cared for. But it is the most expensive piece of non-darkroom equipment I own, and I had it made to look how I wanted it. You can call that foolish, but why should I care about your opinion?

My anti-panda black paint M7 had a slight mishap, and I scratched/dinged one corner of the bottom plate. Fortunately, that seems to be all that was hurt. I was thinking I might get an MP plate as a replacement, if it's compatible. Is the MP plate essentially the same? I'd also love the auf/zu labels the MP plate sports, but that my M7 plate lacks.

You should have no problem with the base plate fitting your M7. I've had my M4 for 26 years and it dates from 1967. I've used it well all this time and in looking at it recently, I decided it's time for an overhaul and makeover. I want to give it some new life and a new look for the next 39 years. I purchased some mint black paint parts and once they arrive, out it goes for much needed work and makeover. There is nothing wrong in wanting to keep your equipment bright and shiny. But there is also something nice knowing where every ding, dent and scratch came from, and that these all came from making the images you wanted to make.

Actually, I'm not sure how to make a car analogy with this one. I'm of the mind that a scratch or dent in a car, it's not worth replacing the door the offending mark is on, or wherever. I guess the closest I could come woul d be someone getting a scratch on the trunk of their car and having the trunk replaced with a trunk with a spoiler on the back?

Actually, a closer one may be a BMW with factory rims. You drove up a curb and messed up the tires, and dented the rims. You get them replaced with new tires and shiny new *INSERT BRAND NAME* rims. I guess that would be the closest. Yeah, so if you went to the car enthusiast forum and asked if the *bling bling* rims will fit on *Brand X* tires, you'd probably get a lot more help.

Then again, not many in the car enthusiast forums would be caught dead with a scratch on their car. They'd get it retouched or repainted instantly.

That may be the issue right there. Are we a car enthusiast forum that cares a lot about cosmetics? We blab on about "user" cameras and oggle people with nice brassing on their cameras, and yet we're worried about a litte scratch? We're a bit schizophrenic as a community, which basically means one thing. We're diverse and come with many opinions.

I actually didn't see him calling it foolish. You're right though. You don't have to care about his opinion, or anyone elses who doesn't agree with you. I'm not sure if you understand this but I'll try to explain. Please don't assume that I'm insulting you because I'm not.

Humans have a tendency to assume that other humans with more expensive toys or more material goods like to "flaunt" them. IE. show them off for good reactions. There is an assumption made, based on the language you used to describe your camera; That you were asking for help but at the same time, stating that you can afford such an expensive item and afford to replace entirely a part on it no matter the cost.

Also, you state that you like the markings on the bottom plate of the MP 'better' than the standard ones on the M7. You like the markings better. Actually, you still haven't stated if there were any mechanical problems with the M7 due to the dent.

Do you see why another human being may be thinking that you're simply showing off AS WELL as asking for help? I put AS WELL in capitals to make sure that no one missed it. Like I said, I'm trying to explain to you why I or others may see your original post in not such a good light.

Anyways, arguing on the internet is a pointless endeavour since both sides don't have to care about each others opinions.

If I've managed to insult you with the above, then you lack reading comprehension. This last line, however, is meant to be insulting to those who can't read.

And for everybody's information:As far as I know there is no substantial price difference between Panda, Antipanda and equivalent standard M camera's.

I'm not sure you got a complete answer, but FWIW, I checked out my black chrome M7 bseplate and my black paint MP plate. I can see no differece functionally, and they both fit nicely on either camera. The black MP plate has the "open-auf" and "close-zu" markings and a chrome "fold-down" knob, as you note.

Well, I have my answer anyway. Thanks to Mike Richards for confirming the plates really are interchangeable.

I apologize for flaunting it. I'm not trying to be a snob or braggart, so perhaps I should have just described the camera as a black paint M7. I just prefer to be specific.

The camera is still usable, and I guess I'm just trying to self-justify replacing the damaged plate with the one with the cool German/English writing, which I would have asked for at the time I ordered the camera if I'd known about it. Now that the original is dinged, I think I'll get the MP bottom and save the other as a spare "rough conditions" bottom.
