Very soon P&S cameras will have 4K video capability, some phones already have 4K shooting ability, but lets consider 4K capable P&S cameras.
Most of the time when people take photos with a P&S camera, they hold the camera and move it around until they click the shutter. With 4K video capable camera why even bother to take still images, just record 4K video, move the camera to different angles and when you got back home, play the video and 'grab' frames from it.
Many people are going to call this cheating but at the same time many people could care less. In fact some people are not even going to capture their own 4K footage, they're going to download videos from youtube and other sites and grab stills from them, it will be next to impossible for even the person who shot the video to be able to spot this.
So, in the very near future, every 'great' shot is going to be suspect, is it a still or a video grab?

The average joe doesn't want to grab anything using external software...that is why cellphone cameras are so popular.

I've owned new and boy, that first scratch sure hurts.
Now I prefer clean used gear and less to worry about.
There's no new film gear I'd be interested in anyway...

The average Joe who has kids will soon learn that by shooting 4K video he does not even have to wait for that right moment for the baby to smile. The average soccer mom is also going to learn that she no longer needs to time for that in-game moment, she can just shot 4K video and think about moments later on.
'The moment' has been a mainstay of still photography for a long time, and it depended on the photographer to capture it, high-res video is going to take that skill away from the photographer and give to the 'editor'...

With digital photography and video the issue that I see is that so many still shots and video is taken, the 'editor' may never get around to finding the 'the moment.'
A lot of folks want to capture a moment, now, and move on. Post it on Facebook or Instagram or UTube, Going back and editing just may not happen for the average Joe or soccer mom.
Using new or old is simply finding the right tool for the job.
