Hi all,

I went to Walmart today and happen to go by the Eyeglass store
they have their and the two sales people had a button which read
"Ask about Nikon Lenses" So I did. So for $167.00 dollars you can
get Lenses made by Nikon and put them in your eyeglasses. So
I'm asking is Nikon Feeling the pinch and has to sell eyeglass now
to make up for loses in the cameras or other reasons???😱

Well I read somewhere that they are thinking of getting into the smartphone market so this wouldn't surprise me.

I'm sure that Nikon and Canon must both be feeling the pinch .... Fuji has a stranglehold on innovation at the moment and these two giants must be sweating about it a little! 😀

I have them. Theyre not a bad product.

I was going to go for the Zeiss but my insurance company was going to **** me over if I did. typical, of course.

My optical sunglasses have Rodenstock lenses and frames. These companies are huge and they have obviously found it worthwhile to take advantage of their well known names and their expertise to diversify.

I make it a policy not to get my undies in a twist over any brand name. Lenses are not that hard to make. And you can always buy manufacturing expertise you don't have at the moment.

This is nothing new! and it goes for many different companies. And what's so surprising about Nikon lenses in general? Glasses, camera, microscope, cell incubator observation, digital pathology, binoculars. Wouldn't want to put their eggs all into one basket.

about loosing camera markets, this is how Nikon is feeling. not very innovative IMO 🙁 source.

"The actions that Nikon is taking to improve the situation include:
  • 'Accelerating shifting newer products in the entry class of DSLR'
  • 'Reconsider product planning of Nikon 1. Nikon 1 represents the majority of sales volume reduction of 550,000 interchangeable-lens type digital cameras'
  • 'Revise development plan for new compact [cameras]. Although our market share had been expanding in recent years, sales volume will diminish more than the estimated market shrink. Will maintain profitability as is.' "

As noted above, Nikon, Rodenstock, and Zeiss have made glasses for opticians for years. Nikon has high index glass (or polycarbonate) which allows for high corrective index (my wife wears -9 diopter) without undue thickness of the lens.

Don't know about Nikon. But Rodenstock and Zeiss have been making eyeglass lenses as long as or even longer than they have made camera lenses.
