Is the IPhone killing the Leica?

Well, the title of the website is self-explanatory : Just what I see ...
More seriously, and not entering in the usual "it is not the tool, it is the eye"
Creative framing, he sees well the contrasts but very little pictures with a story or feeling and perspective do not seem to be a factor in his picture taking.
And personally, I like blurred backgrounds, I won't see that for some years with an Iphone...

It's impressive what he manages to pull off, though he probably has to touch the photos up a lot to get those results. The camera on the iPhone is pretty lame. There really isn't any comparison to any proper camera -- leica or otherwise.

Xax, mine's not killing my Leica that's for sure! my iphone lives in my trouser pocket along with my loose change which has transformed the lens into a great soft focus portrait lens! (still c@@p)

If that were the case, any cellphone shooter would be a threat. Nope, I don't think the iPhone may harm Leica.

But I'm not saying anything about Nikon, Casio, Canon, Contax, Sony and Samsung, among other digicam makers. 🙂

I use my phone camera when I have nothing else with me. To spice things up a bit, I added music and made a slideshow out of the photos since otherwise, they'd just be low-fi crappy snapshots.

Occasionally I strike on a good composition with the phone. Here's some examples of what I'm talking about:

I haven't made any of these in a while, but I should.. My phone camera is full of shots.

I don't think you'll ever see a gallery full of phone photos. They wouldn't be able to print em very large without blur and quality loss coming into play. My phone cam is about the same quality as an iphone.

You can't call your mother on your ZI ... can you?

For that, I use my iPhone 😉

Seriously, iPhone is handy and the camera on in is decent, but no DOF control, shutter lag, and typical digital cleanness always makes me wish I have my XA with me.

The guy mentioned above has a consistent style, but without any disrespect, not as special as others I've seen.

Unfortunately, the size of the images that are seen on that Website... Are about the only size those pictures will look good at. 😉

Well, I would love to agree with you, but having seen life-size and larger than life-size pictures by Guido Karp at the Vernissage of his "The Nudes" exhibition in Cologne last year, I must tell you, I was pretty much impressed...

Agreed, if you "pixel-peeped" and looked at the prints from a distance of 10-20cm, you might have been just a bit disappointed, but... They were taken with a 3.2 MP phone!
At "normal" viewing distances, those pictures were just gorgeous...

It's still mostly eye & brain, not only modern equipment...

And thank G*d for that; otherwise how could I justify all those lovely old RF, MF and other cameras I own???🙂

Cheers,
Michael

Unfortunately I do have a mobile phone, but it is seven years old and on it's third battery - and has no camera.

I must admit that it is much harder to ring someone using the M3 though.

Then again, I was given a joke "keyfob" camera of about 100k pixels. Results are rather Holga like, but of limited interest, and it eats batteries.

This thread inspired me a bit, so I took my Nokia (6500. newish but quite cheap) out for a spin this lunchtime - I'd never used the camera on the phone, or even thought of using it, before today, and I was sort of pleasantly surprised - it must be the Carl Zeiss lens and the 3 megapixels (!!). I'd say the image quality was roughly the same as a basic point and shoot from 4 or 5 years ago - super punchy, cartoonish colours, but for casual snaps as a "visual notehook" I quite like the images - and in some ways it's not a million miles away from the rangefinder aesthetic - small, compact, unobtrusive, nobody pays you any attention. One to try again. Here's a couple:

Many of us value our rangefinders for their relative unobtrusiveness, and in this capacity a cell phone camera can also excel. There are many settings where hiding even a small and quiet camera is difficult, but people have become so desensitized to cell phone use that they may disappear in plain sight. It's just another part of the tool kit.

that's sad...sorry. ok, I'll not look at this thread again

Well in other countries (specially in Asia) built-in camera's in cell phones can definitely rival some of the p&s out there... it's not far off.

I enjoy taking photos, these are just tools we use... the more the merrier.

No, but I think that it will kill digital p&s, for sure. Who will ever buy a cheap around 100/200 $ digi just to get pictures to show to friends, at work, at the bar....
