Is the MP Rangefinder Modification worth it on my M6?

I agree.

I had the VF in my .85 M6TTL upgraded. There was significant improvement but it wasn't perfect. I believe the .85 finders flare more than the lower magnification ones.

Let us know if you notice a difference when you get the camera back.

Small correction: The frame-line masks including the M4-P with brass top-plate are more accurate (of the old M2/M4/M5 style) while all following models including the M7 and MP (but NOT the MP classic) have the less accurate frame-lines (smaller and corrected for 3m distance) ;)
 
I was having film advance issues on my .72 Wetzlar M6 and sent the camera to Youxin. He replaced the film advance gear with a brass gear and while he was at it I asked him to do the finder upgrade. It's a big difference. The white out was infuriating to me and that is much improved. I think you should do it. Sherry does beautiful work and so does Youxin.

I have had my M6 for over 10 years, bought it used from KEH, bargain condition and it has worked beautifully in many countries including my own. After reading so much about CLA I was wondering if I should send mine in and it might be even better. But I think the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" sentiment is the right one.

I have rarely noticed any flare and if it's too dark to focus it's usually too dark to photograph.

well, i wouldn't send it in under those conditions. some believe in preventive maintenance - having service done from time to time to avoid a more "catastrophic" failure. me, i think the concept applies to machinery like vehicles and home/industrial equipment, not cameras for which most have a spare.
 
The funny thing is I just took my M6 out to shoot the rest of the roll of film I had in the camera before boxing it up and sending it off to Sherry and now the film advance is working fine. The first couple of rolls worked fine then I had trouble with the last roll and now it seems to be working fine again. I guess I will see if it continues to have this issue before sending it in to Sherry. Unfortunately, now that I have made up my mind to do the viewfinder upgrade I really would like to have it done. Especially every time I encounter the flare/whiteout.
 
Where is everyone shooting to get this viewfinder flare? I've shot with my M4-P everywhere and anywhere I've ever been, and I've never seen a hint of it. Maybe I just don't know what to look for.
 
I had my M6 TTL upgraded last summer. It went to Leica UK for sticking framelines and I was quoted a small amount for upgrade parts as top would already be off. Huge difference. No White-out in certain conditions, better contrast.
I'd say it's worth it.

It's not frequent but when it happens, it's infuriating, and you'll know about it. The rangefinder patch just goes white, with either no image or an image so faint and washed-out as to be useless. The worst I ever had was shooting some folk musicians on an outdoor stage at the Broadstairs Folk Festival at night: highly directional lighting. It was so bad I had to stop using the M4-P and use exclusively the M2 I was also carrying (I like to use 2 cameras, 2 lenses).

To the OP: yes, if it needs a repair, a reputable repairer will 'muck it out' while he/she is in there, and as others have said, that's the time for the finder upgrade. I'd certainly go for it. But a CLA if the camera is working -- no.
