Is the Rokkor M 90 a scaled down Tele Elmarit?

I recently purchased a late model Rokkor M 90mm. I think the one I have is the v2 for the CLE. I've compared it side by side with my V1 Elmarit and its a little contrastier and very sharp even wide open. Ive owned several 90's including the thin Tele Elmarit. The Rokkor resembles the Tele in that the total length of the lens is quite a bit shorter than my V1 Elmarit so it has to be a Tele design.

Is the Rokkor M an f4 version of the Tele Elmarit? How do the optical formulas compare?

One of my complaints about the Tele Elmarit was flare wide open and being slightly soft at 2.8. At f 4 it performed very well. The Rokkor has less flare IMO and and about the same sharpness at comparable f stops.

Any thoughts?

The Rokkor and the Leica Elmar-C are the same construction, i.e. a 4/4 design. The Tele-Elmarit 2.8 is a 5/3 design. The Tele-Elmarit is optically a little bit better (mostly in microcontrast) but for the money the Rokkor/Elmar is hard to beat.

I was looking at Ken Rockwells site and in two places he says ghe tele Elmarit is a 4/4 design. Typo?

I'm wondering whether it might actually be the same as an f4 Tele Elmarit.

My understanding is the Leica R lens has the 5/4, and the Leica M lens is 4/4

90mm Tele Elmarit-M
1964 chrome non rotating mount. 1966 black anodized mount. 1974 new model introduced, optical design reduced from 5 to 4 element, weights less, slimmer lens barrel, only available in black.

That being said, the CLE 90 Rokkor is probably the sharpest Tele that I have.

Nice to have f2.8 on the Tele Elmarit, though. Since the lenses are basically the same size, I end up using the TE, mostly.
