Gee, uhoh7, is your camera upside down? Where's the pentaprism? And it looks like your lens broke in the middle...

PS: I discreetly don't mention it in my sig line, but I also like Pentax slrs and just got a Leica SLR. After all this IS the RFF!

A Leica SLR? Which one?

For versatility, look for the 60mm/2.8 Leica Macro Elmarit R and then find a camera to attach it to for the minimum of funds....

... than an SLR with a normal lens?
i'm talking single focal length here; leave yer zooms in the case ...
from 12-18 inches (closer, if you're talking macro normal) to infinity.
I have always believed that versatility is the enemy of style, but having said that, I do think that the most versatile one-lens kit would be a Rollei TLR, as the crop opportunities are many and varied.
Good to seer you back and well, Paul.

Many SLR have that capability, or at least winders. I use the winder on my Contax 167mt because I don't have a choice. I stopped using a winder on my Contax 139Q and my FX-103s because I didn't like the weight or noise. And my thumb still works well and I don't have to leave the shutter cocked all the time. Motor drives are only good with 250 exposure backs. But to each his own.

Depends on your definition of versatile; a LF camera with movements is probably more versatile from the perspective of controlling the result. A digital camera (anything with the ability to change ISO) is more versatile than film from an agility standpoint.
Lots of interesting ways to interpret this question.

yes, a SLR with a 35 mm
Indeed. 35mm is also my 'normal' lens.
RF is not as versatile as SLR, but it makes it up in the non-threatening, and quick operation department.

If you limit yourself to one lens, why choose a big camera with mirror slap ?
I would pick my Hexar AF over Nikon or OM with only 35/2 anytime. Min. focus of 23" which also seems good enough.
And for you digital guys, the X100 seems to fit the bill just as nicely.

I have a zoom and so do you, it's called your legs. My zoom works great.I agree to a point ... but for exploiting the total versatility of an SLR you must use a zoom!
That said ... I don't like zooms but they do have their uses occasionally where a prime is no go.

True it is a RF forum and I for one use RF's at least 85% of the time. But the Film SLR forums out there are poor at best IMHO and since a lot of us still hold onto and love some of our classic film SLR's, where else can we go for intelligent conversation? So please Moderators please tolerate us or we would be cyber orphans.:angel:i'm fighting a losing battle...

I agree with Paul. My OM-4 & 28mm is just so easy to use. Makes for a nice little walk around kit with X100. (Negotiating on on Hexar RF kit at present so things might change soon
)
Well, here 'tis, remembering I like Pentax too.A Leica SLR? Which one?

hmmm, beside my bessa and her "german sister" I like to use my FM2 with a 50mm F1,4 AIS...not sure it is the most versatile but it is amusing to use !

Another contented Leica R user here (R7), with the 35/2 Summicron-R as my main lens. (Also use the 24/2.8 Elmarit and the 50/2 Summicron.) I do B&W street photography, and find it very responsive, with a bright, large VF that makes focusing easy. The lens is no slouch either.

Konica T3 with 50mm - Pentax 6x7 with 105mm - did 90% of my pro work with that configuration back in the bad old days. Versatile? Sure! Just a little foot work (and a spare wide lens in the bag)

The best camera is one that still works!

And if you don't have the luxury of legs Akiva ... where does that leave you?
Needing a zoom!
