Is this a range finder?

This is another piece of the equipment that I inherited. I am not quite sure if this is a range finder or not. I

I have no idea how it is used.

Nope, its a Canon viewfinder. I'm sure you could easily find someone to give it a good home as there are quite a few Canon users on the forum.

Looks like you have a Canon viewfinder that fits in the fash shoe of a rangefinder camera. It appears to be ajustabke for different focal lengths and also for parallex. The first photo shows the different focal lengths that it can be set to and the second photo shows the parallex correction which can be set after focussing the lens and reading the distance off the lens. The distance shown on the lens is then set on the finder. I am sure some of the Canon users here will comment. It looks similar to a Leitz finder that I have.

How do you tell which it is? The number is11843 and list the country as Japan. Feet is 3.5 to infinity. Can you tell by the photo?

by the markings it looks like a multifinder that crops the viewing area, with focal lengths of 35, 50, 85, 90, 100 and 135

It looks like a partial copy of the Leitz "Imarect" finder. If that's the case, it does not zoom like the cylindrical Tewe or Nikon finders. The focal length dial controls an internal rectangular mask that gets smaller as you change to longed focal lengths. OK for 35mm and 50mm, and rather tiny for 85/90 and up. Not great for many glasses wearers at 35mm.

Canon called these a "Universal" finder and has a small thread in the front nose to accept a 28mm chrome adapter similar to a Leica version ............which the name at the moment escapes me.
