Hi All,
As many CV lens users here know - CV black lenses - most or at least some of them lose their paint rather easy with just light to moderate use. So, I wounder would Cosina take care of it for free? I mean it really sucks when you get a brand new lens and within a year it looks like it's well used even if it's not. Would warranty cover it? WHat about lenses that just out of warranty? I mean I have (or have had) some Hexanon and Leica lenses that are far older and seen more use and paint is there just like new. I think CV should stand behind it's products, even if it's just brassing/paint loss.
WHy bother? I know some people do like that well used look to their Leicas, but when it comes to selling your lens, brassed one will bring less money than one that looks new, given that glass and mechanics are the same. Or am I wrong here?

Any thoughts?

Worn black paint = instant credibility. Or, = reduced second-hand value. You can't have both.

Reputedly, some black-paint MP users regard toothpaste as a good way to 'age' their cameras. D*ck-heads ('duck', of course), but there you go.

If you are buying a lens as an investment, buy chrome. Or buy black and don't use it.

If you buy black to use because you prefer it, don't whinge.

Cheers,

R,

Wear is not covered by CV's warranty.

Well, what can I say - it's too bad. I suppose this is why they cost so much less.........Oh well. I wonder how Cosina made Zeiss lenses will hold up in paint brassing department.

I can sell you my Ultron, Joe - that way you will have a lens that looks well used, yet optically and mechanically perfect. And it has a very nice bokeh too 😉

i'm thinking i need less lenses so the ones i do have start looking a bit more used.
btw, what is this bokeh you speak of...😉

The wear of some of the black Voigtlander lenses is truly poor. Its probably one of the biggest criticisms I have of Voigtlander lenses and can understand why you are upset about it. I dont buy into the make you look more like a professional if its brassing propaganda, If I try to look after things so they remain in good condition and hold their value. My 28mm f3.5 (a lens that was bought through Cameraquest not grey Market) had quite alot of brassing when I sold it and only took not more than 100 shots with it. The argument that you get what you pay for doesn't quite wash either, all the other cheap manufacturers like Tokina, Tamron and Sigma (with their older metal lenses) have really robust black finishes. On a positive note, if im not mistaken from the couple that I own is that the later M mount lenses like the 40mm 1.4 Pancake 2 and M mount 21 seem to have a harder wearing black finish than before, we will see how it goes in the longer term.

I don't know CV will fix it.
At first I loved the black paint ones . . . I had the 28/1.9 and 35/1.2 in black paint.
Then after some use . . . it was rubbing off.
My advice buy the silver ones.

I guess what you get is what you pay for.

This is what my Ultron looks like after a couple of years of normal (not hard) use:

I find that hardly normal.

My black 40mm Nokton looks spotless, as does my black 15mm Heliar. I've got a 50mm Heliar f2 coming in the mail, and I hope it holds up as well.

I'm sorry to see that brass showing through! It does indeed make the lens look well used.

Some CV lenses brass heavily, others don't. From personal experience I've seen both Ultrons and the 50/1.5 brass quickly. The M-mount 40 Nokton, 35/2.5 PII, and 28/3.5 seem to have better paint. On the Nokton and 35/2.5 the focus knob brasses a bit after a while - but that's it.

If you don't like the brassing - get a chrome lens 🙂

Also - better brassing than wobbling.

Roland.

Photovillage is an official distributor, too, right ? Only had great experience with Rich and staff. Buying outside CA reduces taxes for me.

Actually the 28mm f3.5 was the worst I have seen in any Voigtlander lens. When new the Black paint was translucent, you could literally see the brass underneath straight out of the box! After mounting the lens no more than 50 times the brass was warn through at the grip at the rear of the lens and also on the aperture ring. Sounds like they added more paint to the later versions but disappointing for those who jumped in early to get one. I switched to a Rokkor 28 and have used it at least 10 times more than the Voiglander and not a single sign of wear and it was already 20 years old.

Well if you are 40+ take your "stonewashed" black lense with you to photo fairs and start telling stories how you and Carl (Mydans) coverde the Korean war together....The brassing will add to your credibility....if you are 60 + talk about the time when you had to use cranks to start a car.....
