Isn't that the Kalart set-up? I prefer the Graflex flash and bracket. At the price of the bulbs these days you may as well just shoot 4X5 film.

But nothing could pump out the light like big flash bulbs.

And I always thought the big reflector most have gave a better quality to the light. I also think they are better for painting with light as well, just for the quality of light (coverage) they produce.

The Norman 200B was a powerful flash, but one of the most reliable flashes ever made. It was heavy as hell too! .

Man, I carried those around hot, dusty dirt racetracks. The light was awesome - but I got tired of that pack. I realized the new DSLRs were pretty darn good at ISO800 and went with one or two SB's instead.


Back to the original question: You could consider an old Nikon SB-10 or SB-27 as as compact flash, with Automatic built in. I sill use all the SB-24 or 25's I can get as I'm usually using them on manual anyhow.

BTW, that Diana setup is sweet.

I have two sets of the Ebay triggers. There are some minor problems with them. But there are also fixes for these problems and they are all over the IN. If you are unlucky enough to have Ebay trigger problems, go to Flickr and group strobist and search under cactus triggers. They have many good fixes.

Actually, gadgetinfinity.com where I bought my cactus triggers have a very good customer service.

I bought two receivers and one transmitter from them, when the stuff came, the transmitter won't work, so I emailed them and they immediately send another one to me. But then on a whim I tried the non-working one again and this time it started working.

When I asked them if I should return the second transmitter, they said just keep it. So I have two transmitters and two recievers.

Now what's that if it's not good service?

OK, I know this is RFF, but if you put that flash on a Contax or any of the Yashica FX models that have otf metering, you will be both surprised and happy. (For those times you may choose not to use an RF 😛 )

The flash did come with one of my Contax bodies but I never used them on-the body since it can't be swiveled to bounce the light.

And I don't like the look of frontal lighting from on-camera flashes no matter how subtle it is.

Seriously, I decided a long time ago that I'd rather miss the pics that needed flash, than carry my Metz 45 CT-1 around with me. I 'lent' it to a friend in the 90s and haven't missed it since.

No, not crazy. Bigger flashes are more useful in real world terms, though of course they are bulky and can be a pain to fit in your bag. At least it's winter now, and one of good size will fit in a coat pocket.

I'm not into the Gilden thing, though I know that he simplifies street photography for a lot of people here, but a small camera with a handheld flash handles much better than the same unit atop of an SLR.

In fact, I would go as far as to say, though I agree with Cartier Bresson's sentiment that using flash can be ''like taking a pistol to the concert'', that it is probably one of the most creative forms of photography as you are in control of the power and direction of light's creation. Much in the same way as filcking on the light of the enlarger. Flash can certainly make something of the overcast day's that are so common here in the UK.

Available light is great, unless it's unavailable. You/One may well miss something important because you were dying hard with the sentiments of the purists. We've all been there..

Is there a module for Contax G2 to the Norman; which will enable me to make use of TTL?

I know they have them for Canon/Nikon to the Norman and Contax to other bare bulb flash makes. I can't seem to find any information about Contax to Norman.

Well, I use my Leica X1 (a very small camera) with my Metz 45CL=4 Digital handle-mount flash. It looks weird and out of place, but it works just fine.
