Is this sad? I think it is.

A friend of mine had the old Minolta 300/2.8, and it was white. It was so old, that indeed the paint was wearing off.

...maybe it's not sad if he's happy with his painted lens.

...maybe it's not sad if he's happy with his painted lens.

all-in-all, if painting his lens makes him happy - i'm happy for him. :p

i'm also happy for the driver of the teeny tiny compact car with a three foot tall spolier/wing on their car, i'm happy for the guys or gals i see fishing in their thirty+ year old tri-hull boat and for those in the new '08 bass tracker deluxe. i'm happy for the guys or gals that pile on so much chrome and lights on their motorcycle I'm not sure if there's anything under it all and the guy down the street that suits up like an nfl lineman everytime he puts on his rollerblades. i'm happy for -but would rather not hear- the rolling boombox on four wheels that's behind me at the stoplight. but, arrghh, sometimes i think...what are "they" thinking??

then i think about different things i'm doing, thinking, believing, etc and groan/smile/just shake my head/guffaw/snicker/blush/etc. i'll also think about the past - what i did, or thought or believed. aaarrgghh! thank goodness there wasn't a camera or tape rolling.

i think about what i've learned - and am still learning - from my wife and parents about grace and how it applies to my interaction with the world about me...it's only taken me five and half decades or so to "get it" ...and i'm still working on it (and the middle path).

maybe the man was driven (thank you advertising hype meisters) to paint his lens white so he could "keep up with the joneses" because he couldn't afford/justify/etc newer more modern equipment. who knows? if he's happy with that ... i am happy for him.

i think the op showed a generosity of the heart for that man with the painted lens that the world could use more of.

on a lighter note...you can now buy a solid white holga on ebay....:p

Dear Kenneth,

What a cheering response! It quite brightened my day, which had already started well with a cheque arriving in the post and an issue of the British Journal of Photography that I enjoyed readings (which is not always the case).

Thanks,

Roger

Hehe. I used to be a Minolta guy. Sold all my glass, but the Dynax 7 still sits lonely on a shelf. Nobody wants it anymore, at least not for a decent amount of money.

Minolta I like, too. I'd still like to get a TC-1. It's Sony that I dislike. ;)

but wait - there's more!!

but wait - there's more!!

barrett,

Kenneth,

You had a Water Buffalo? Two snaps up for you, man! Purple was my fave color for it, too. (And one-and-a-half-snaps-up to anyone who knows what the hell we're talking about here.) ;)

I agree - you can't tell if it's sad unless you know the reason. Of course you won't get a lot of heat from the sun at night, but I doubt he only uses the lens at night. And yes, maybe there is no difference in performance from heat buildup, but if people believe it...
Or else maybe he got it second hand - In fact, maybe it was a great lens he got for a song because it was hand painted!

Easy. 2-strokes, three cylinders, water cooled. Mid-seventies.

"...bubble, bubble, toil and trouble."

"...bubble, bubble, toil and trouble."

warning, thread drift ...thread drift...

that bit came to me when i thought of my "water buffalo" aka "tea kettle" as i think it was called in an article in the uk motorcycle publication "Bike" some time back. i've my apologies to give to the spirit of the bard of avon if i've played loose with that macbeth quote...

roger: thank you. i do enjoy your words and images and books.

barrett: oh, the '70's were quite a time. i also had a kawasaki h2 750 ...during the '70's - i am pretty sure the letter "h" stood for hospital bound......i guess :p:eek::p i had a real love of deadly gear and past times...and waaayyyyyyyy too much testosterone. i'm just happy to still be around with the scar tissue, arthritis, bursitis, various numb spots and limited range of motion form my "mis-adventures" :D

miguel: i think we may know each other...the last time you saw me i was headed to the yucatan from the valley...how did things work out with the 924? still have your triumph? oops, if this isn't who i thought it was.

Wrong person but we might still know each other. I had a Ducati 900 SS for quite a few years and now ride a Suzuki DR650S.
