I just received my M6 in the mail today and I think I have a problem: the framelines don't change with the preview level or with the lens. The 35 and 135 lines always show even when the 50 is mounted. Am I simply doing something wrong or is this going to cost me money and time to fix? If a fix, how much do you think??

Flick the frame lever a couple of times and let it click back into position. if this doesn't do it it looks like a repair is in order.

No idea of cost or time but give DAG a call.

If a repair is in order i think I would talk to the seller and see if they will cover the cost or return the camera. Plenty of excellent ones out there.

I don't know where you are but I had a similar problem with my first M6. It was caused by some migration of the lubricants causing the mask to stick. Removal of the top and cleaning of the masks should clear the problem, I had mine done by Peter at CRR. I can't remember the exact cost but it was only a fraction of a full service.

I just called DAG, and he said it would be about $85 + shipping to fix stuck framelines. He said it was probably a problem with the lube as Kim stated. That's not bad and my seller is going to cover the repair cost. I don't mind too much to pay for shipping since the seller ate the big Paypal fees, and it's easier to fix my great looking M6 instead of searching for another at the same price.

While the body looks great and seems to perform as it should, should I just get a CLA done while it's in the shop? The body is from 1997 and hasn't been serviced since.

I'd ask Don what he thinks when he gets your M6

I'm with Shac. It's probably cheaper to have him do it now anyway (shipping only once, plus he's already got it open).

Don does great work. Might as well get that M6 in the best shape it's been in since it was born.

My experince has been only with Sherry Krauter, but my point is that both Sherry and DAG are plenty busy and neither one of them has the slightest interest in doing unnecessary work. They're gonna be straight with you, so you could just ask them whether they think the CLA is in order or not. I just had a CLA on my 1996 M6 but it's seen a lot of use.

I told Don that I hoped to have the body back soon to use for class and he said he could rush it a bit for me. Hope that works out. I also emailed him asking how much more a CLA would cost in addition. If it's not too much more (I've heard around $290 for a full CLA but I don't know if that would be in addition to my $80) and the work time is the same, I'll probably do it. I'll see what he says in a couple of days.

While Don's in there, you may consider having him install the flare free viewfinder upgrade. I am very happy with the job Don did on my M6TTL -- it was $190 well spent.

Have Dag do a full CLA while he has the camera. It will come back better than new and you won't be worrying about the camera malfunctioning for a long long time

I had the exact problem with my newly acquired M6 (built in '98) last year and DAG fixed it up for the same price he quoted you. I believe that he also checks/aligns the rangefinder while he is in there. His exam of the camera said a CLA was not justified at the time.

I'm going to get the 3/4 CLA. At $110 more than simply fixing the framelines, I don't see why not. I doubt my M6 would need a full CLA at this time, so I hopefully use the money saved from only doing a 3/4 job could be used on another lens 😉
