Every so often, I read on here how some of you stumble into such and such great findings (most recent being amateriat's "last crusade"). Well, today I lucked into a bit of a finding of my own :)

I went over to a friend's house this evening to help him clean the sensor on his DSLR and hang out for a bit. Photography's always been in his family and his parents had been running a camera and print store up until very recently when he was forced to close down shop (he couldn't compete with the big corporations anymore). Anyways, he had mentioned his dad left a bunch of the stuff he couldn't sell at his place and I was more than welcome to have a look through it in case I was interested in anything. When I last talked to him about it, he just said there was a bunch of old film camera stuff, some filters, etc... So I figured it wouldn't have been much more than a bunch of old SLRs and lenses and accessories left behind from consignment that never got sold and went unclaimed. At the very least, I was hoping to get some left over film for free :D

When I got there, there was about a dozen boxes in his closet. Yes there was a box full of filters and accessories (two boxes, actually) as well as a couple full of old SLR stuff. As I kept digging, the things in the boxes just got better and better. For every "neat" thing I came across, I was telling him how much it was worth and how much I might be able to get for it for him, so I offered to help sell it for him. Obviously his dad knew what these were worth, but it seemed like he really didn't have the drive to try selling these, certainly not online, so with his permission, I hauled the boxes back home, to which I'll start cataloging and trying to sell them off for him.

Box o' stuff, minus the filters:

And some of the goodies inside the boxes :D

This was neat from a collector's standpoint, but in all honesty, I didn't get too excited about it. Maybe it's because I already have a 500c/m that I can use :)

THIS, however, did get me excited!

I believe this brand is popular here?

Don't like SLRs? How about these?

As an added incentive, he even offered to let me keep something I may be interested in (possibly one of the M6's or the Xpan) even after I told him the value of them, but to be honest, I don't know if I could take such a lavish offering. But we'll see!

And to think, he said all the point and shoot cameras sold instantly when he was selling off everything! Hahaha!

Anyways, keep an eye on the marketplace in the next week or so. ;)

if you don't take it, take something and give it to an artist who hasn't got much income, but would use the stuff: Me. Really. I'd use it for my work. :)

I'd have taken the good stuff, the 501cm, maybe the Xpan, the rest I'd help him ebay. I'd tell him to sit on the M8, some nut will pay 10,000 for one in an un-opened box in a couple of years, gods knows why but they will...

Oops that was an R8, ahh and I went through all this trouble to bash the M8, well, it was fun anyway....

Nice treasure trove! Well done!
Maybe we should set up the "Knights order of benevolent Camera handlers" to give an example how to proceed in these cases.....on the other side that would attract to many people to choose the dark side

Oh yes listen to Fred: Buy a Fedora/Borsalino!

Haha, yeah I'm definitely gonna have a bit of fun going through all those. Heck, I even offered to sell it for him for free just cause I'd have so much fun playing with some of this stuff. One of the boxes is full of old manual SLRs (Pentax, Minolta, Canon, and Nikon bodies and lenses). There's even 3 Canon T90's in there!

I'm debating on whether or not I should put my "cut" towards a hefty discount on the Xpan set, the M6 0.85, or just take enough to put towards an M6 Classic (though I'd really like a chrome body).

does your friend happen to have an old barn out back as well? if so, check it. maybe there's an old corvette with 100 original miles on it sitting under a tarp.

There's no reason why you shouldn't ask for a 25% commission on sales and keep a few things for yourself. You're going to help him get a lot more money then he could get for himself.

Derrick, a hearty congratulations! I can feel the joy :)

In your situation, I'd definitely go for the big fat discount on the Xpan. One thing, don't be tempted to play around with the others, keep'em in the box. So you can honestly sell those in New In Box condition (a lot more selling price).

Xpan, hmmm..... :D :D

Nope, there's absolutely no reason why I shouldn't, however I've never been a greedy person and have always preferred to help others out when I can. Like I said, just getting to go through all this fun equipment is more than enough reward for me, although I'm sure he'll insist I take a cut or something out of the pile.

But you are right, I am helping him get a lot more money than he would've. He thought he could've just unloaded a few things here and there for like $500. I'm sure his dad would've had a heart attack!

Hey Derrick... what about a show & tell over a Starbucks!? ;)

How about I show a Hasselblad I have for sale and tell you what a great deal you'll get?? :D

Oh, I'm definitely considering it!

I assume the father, who knew the value of the merchandise, is no longer with us?

It's not greed, I think if you get something for yourself it's more than fair compensation. And you're taking a lot of work on for yourself, plus, as the seller, you'll be responsible for disgruntled buyers, problems, etc etc, should they arise.

Really there is a reason - your dealing with a friend. I have passed on many thousands of dollars/profits when it comes to dealing with friends - and it has always come back to me later in kind. :)

Well, when you say he's no longer with "us", do you mean us photographers because he's out of the biz? ;) Haha! No, he's still very much alive. After 20+ years selling photography equipment and print services, I guess he finally had enough. Now he's a dealer at the casino (and couldn't be any more happier, from what I've heard)! Haha
